Arlington school shooter is released on bond

Timothy George Simpkins was being held on a $75,000 bond on three charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon but the 18-year-old walked out of Tarrant County Jail on Thursday afternoon.
A bondsman met the bail terms on Thursday, posting at least some of the full amount, and he walked free.
It’s unclear why he has been charged with aggravated assault and not attempted murder or more serious charges, or why the judge granted him bail.
The sister of the teacher who was wounded was disgusted by his release. She tweeted a video of him walking out of the jail and said: ‘How does this keep managing to get worse?’
Video: Woman, 65, chased, punched, dragged in Brooklyn street in attempted robbery

The NYPD on Wednesday released frightening video of a 65-year-old woman being chased down and attacked on a Brooklyn street in an attempted purse snatching.
Surveillance video shows an unidentified suspect ride up on a bicycle, dismount and immediately begin to run after the woman, chasing her down the block and into the middle of the street.
He grabbed her purse, but when she resisted, he punched her in the face multiple times before dragging her to the ground and punching her again, the footage shows.
Police said the victim was able to retain her purse, which contained money from collecting and cashing in aluminum cans.
18 Former NBA Players Are Charged in $4 Million Insurance Fraud Scheme

The scheme lasted from at least 2017 through last year and involved the submission of fraudulent claims for reimbursement of medical and dental services that had not actually been provided, according to a federal indictment unsealed in Manhattan.
For the most part, the 18 former players charged in the scheme played in the NBA in the late 1990s and the 2000s. Two of the most notable are Ronald Glen Davis, nicknamed “Big Baby,” and Tony Allen, both of whom played on the Boston Celtics team that won the NBA championship in 2008.
The indictment said that one of the former players, Terrence Williams, who played for the New Jersey Nets and the Houston Rockets, had orchestrated the scheme and recruited other former players by offering to supply them with false invoices to support their fraudulent claims.
Trump Sues Facebook to Reinstate His Account Immediately

The filing on Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida seeks a preliminary injunction on Facebook’s suspension as his earlier lawsuit proceeds.
His lawyers argued that the United States doesn’t gain “from attempts to suppress political speech,” while adding that those who are antagonistic to [Trump’s] views are not well-served by attempts to silence him.”
“This preliminary injunction against Facebook seems appropriate to file this week since they’ve been big in the news lately for all the issues they’re facing,” said John Coale, lead counsel of the Trump lawsuits, in an interview with the Washington Examiner.
Los Angeles Passes Country’s Strictest Vaccine Mandate

The city council on Wednesday voted 11-2 in favor of a measure that requires proof of full vaccination for all customers and staff at bars, restaurants, nail salons, spas, gyms, sports arenas, museums, indoor city facilities and other locations, the Associated Press reported.
Customers without proof of vaccination can still use outdoor facilities and can briefly enter a business to use a restroom or pick up a food order. People with religious or medical exemptions from vaccination will have to provide negative coronavirus tests within 72 hours of entry.
The ordinance was signed Wednesday afternoon by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and takes effect in the nation’s second-most populous city on Nov. 4, the AP reported.

De Blasio misused NYPD resources for political, personal purposes, DOI report finds

The DOI found that the Democratic mayor misused police resources by directing members of his Executive Protection Unit (EPU) to help move his daughter, Chiara de Blasio, out of her apartment in Brooklyn in 2018.
NYPD personnel helped carry furniture and an NYPD sprinter van carried her belonging to Gracie Mansion, which is the official residence of the mayor of New York City located in Manhattan.
DOI also determined that the City of New York expended $319,794 for the members of Mayor de Blasio’s security detail to travel during his presidential campaign trips.
The mayor has still not reimbursed the city for those funds either personally or through his campaign. The report also says that during these campaign trips, EPU members occasionally transported de Blasio’s campaign staffers with the mayor.
Hunter Biden art show adds to White House ethics headache

Hunter’s attendance at the event came despite the White House previously saying that he would not know the identities of potential buyers.
Biden’s nominee to be U.S. ambassador to India, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, was reportedly among the high-profile attendees at Hunter’s art show.
Other attendees at the 200-person LA Milk Studios exhibition included the musician Moby and world champion boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, according to reports from the Daily Mail, Mother Jones and the New York Post.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Wednesday sidestepped questions about Hunter’s attendance at the art show.
Joe Biden’s brother-in-law asked Hunter Biden to help him secure a business license in China, emails show

The younger Biden then forwarded Owens’ email to Thornton Group Chairman James Bulger, the nephew of mobster Whitey Bulger and co-founder of the Thornton Group.
He also sent it to Michael Lin, a member of the Committee of 100, a New York-based advocacy group that has ties to the United Front, an influence operation of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The Committee of 100 has also had multiple conferences sponsored by China Daily, a media outlet controlled by the CCP.
It was first reported last December in the Washington Post that Owens, who has been married to President Biden’s sister and longtime adviser Valerie Biden Owens since 1975, owns MediGuide, a “Delaware-based telemedicine company that markets itself as a solution” to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
Google, YouTube to prohibit ads and monetization on climate denial content

Google advertisers and publishers, as well as YouTube creators, will be prohibited from making ad revenue off content that contradicts “well-established scientific consensus around the existence and causes of climate change,” the company’s ads team said in a statement.
The company says it has consulted with experts, like representatives of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessment Reports, to create the policy. The report found that there is “unequivocal” evidence showing that human emissions of greenhouse gases are causing global warming.”
Internet companies have been under increased pressure from climate activists to do more to address climate change denial on their platforms.

Turns out, Merrick Garland’s daughter is married to a man who is the co-founder of an “education service company” called Panorama Education, which, you will not be surprised to learn, provides materials on critical race theory to school districts – including dismantling “unconscious bias and systemic racism in schools.”
Oh, so the thing that parents are complaining about, is the thing that Merrick Garland’s family is getting rich from.
Two days ago, Merrick Garland made it a crime to complain about the beliefs that are enriching his family. Does this make sense?

Rep. Tlaib praises group that calls to end US aid to Israel: ‘I get strength from all of you’

The event, “Gaza is Palestine,” was hosted by Palestinian activist Mohammed El-Kurd, who early in the event called for the U.S. to “end all Israeli funding” and said Congress was “spineless” for “aiding and abetting” Israel by providing aid.
Tlaib made a brief appearance late in the program and thanked others for their efforts.

Abbott asks Biden to appeal FEMA’s denial of border crisis disaster declaration

Abbott wrote to Biden on Sept. 20, asking the president to issue an emergency declaration for his state due to the increasingly difficult border crisis. However, days later on Sept. 29, FEMA denied the governor’s request.
“Texas will stand with the federal government in responding to this border crisis, but should not have to stand alone or withstand the financial burden without federal assistance,” Abbott says in the formal appeal of FEMA’s decision.
“Families, including infants and children, need food, water and medical supplies that the local government cannot supply,” Abbott wrote.
“Thousands of families are immobilized in 100-degree heat as their numbers continue to swell as they wait to be processed by the approximately 64 federal agents in the area. Individuals are camping in squalid conditions and bathing in muddy river water, causing great health concerns.”
Senate Leaders Announce Short-Term Deal to Raise Debt Ceiling

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) hammered out the agreement after Democrats refused to fold the debt limit matter into a mammoth budget package they’re hoping to ram through Congress with no Republican votes.
The Democrat told reporters on Capitol Hill that “we’re getting there” when asked if a deal was close before entering the Senate chamber.
The agreement raises the debt ceiling by $480 billion, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) confirmed to reporters. That’s estimated to fund government borrowing until Dec. 3.
McConnell said on the floor that the deal was reached after hours of late-night negotiations. The agreement will “spare the American people a manufactured crisis,” he added.

Opinion: Manipulating viruses and risking pandemics is too dangerous. It’s time to stop.

Questions about public oversight, accident risks and pandemic origins are all legitimate. But perhaps the biggest question of all isn’t being asked insistently enough: Why is anyone trying to teach the world how to make viruses that could kill millions of people?
Like nuclear physics, with its potential for global catastrophe when put to destructive ends, the proliferation of pandemic biology ought to be considered a matter of international security.
Natural pandemics may be inevitable. Synthetic ones, constructed with full knowledge of society’s vulnerabilities, are not. Let’s not learn to make pandemics until we can reliably defend against them.
