Arizona woman wanted for smashing Circle K employee’s head with a brick: police

A woman is wanted in Arizona after she was reportedly caught on video smashing a store employee in the face with a brick and repeatedly slamming the worker’s head into the floor, authorities said Monday.

A woman wearing a cheetah-print hoodie and a face mask walked into the gas station and hit the worker across her face with a brick before demanding the code for the cash register, police said.

Video shows the worker falling to the ground after getting hit. The suspect is seen taking the employee by the head and slamming it into the floor multiple times.

The suspect later walks out of the store with another woman who is carrying an armful of items, according to the video.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating a physical altercation between Border Patrol agents and two men that happened over the weekend in Southern California, the Washington Examiner has learned.

Rep. Mayra Flores (R-TX) shared footage on Instagram of several agents attempting to take down an aggressive man in a half-zipped wetsuit after he repeatedly tried to attack an agent on Imperial Beach. A public affairs official at Border Patrol’s San Diego regional office told the Washington Examiner Tuesday that the incident happened over the weekend.

The video shows one man pinned down by an agent in the sand as another man verbally taunted a second agent and repeatedly tried to rush at the federal law enforcement official. In the background, a crowd that gathered in Tijuana, Mexico, directly behind the border wall cheered loudly, though it is unclear who they were yelling for.

Odessa daycare owner arrested for abusing children in her care after 2-month investigation, deputies say

ODESSA, Fla. – An Odessa daycare owner has been arrested on child abuse charges following a two-month investigation into the Children’s Land of Imagination Academy located on Gunn Highway. 

“Through investigative means, HCSO detectives were able to confirm that the 51-year-old co-owner, in an attempt to put a child down for a nap, forcefully pushed and pulled the head and neck of the victim with her hand,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “She was seen placing both of her legs across the top of the child’s body to try and hold him down. The child victim was crying and flailing their legs throughout the incident.”

Jessica Torres, whose two-year-old son was diagnosed with autism, attended the Children’s Land of Imagination Academy for a year before she learned from a detective in June that he was among several non-verbal children being forcibly restrained at naptime. 

Burger King testing plant-based chicken sandwich

Featuring a plant-based patty from Impossible Foods, the sandwich will be topped with shredded lettuce and mayonnaise on a toasted sesame seed bun.

The sandwich is the latest collaboration between the Restaurant Brands International burger chain and Impossible Foods, Inc., Redwood City, Calif.

Starting with the introduction of the Impossible Whopper in 2019, the companies have brought consumers plant-based alternatives to a variety of menu favorites. Product testing for Impossible Chicken Nuggets began in October 2021, and two new Impossible burgers, the Impossible King and the Impossible Southwest Bacon Whopper, were introduced in June.

Meta Reaches $37.5M Settlement in Facebook Location Tracking Lawsuit

Court documents show that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has reached a $37.5 million settlement in a lawsuit accusing the company of violating the privacy of some users by tracking their movements through their smartphones without permission. This is not the first time Facebook has been accused of tracking users.

This settlement was filed Monday in federal court in San Francisco and still needs to be approved by a judge. 

The case stems from claims that Facebook gathered location data on users who had turned off location services on their mobile devices, in violation of California law and Facebook’s own privacy policy.

People in the United States who used Facebook after Jan. 30, 2015, are covered in this settlement.

Toxic PFAS Chemicals in Fracking Wells Detected in Drinking Water

Latkanich is a resident of Washington County, Pennsylvania, one of the state’s most heavily fracked regions. In 2020, an Environmental Health News (EHN) investigation found evidence that Latkanich and his son Ryan had been exposed to harmful chemicals like benzene, toluene and styrene.

Now, researchers have uncovered more harmful substances in Latkanich’s tap water — “forever chemicals.”

Last year it was revealed that these chemicals, collectively referred to as PFAS (per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances), have been used in U.S. oil and gas wells for decades.

As far as the experts we spoke with know, this is the first time PFAS that may be linked to fracking have been detected in household drinking water.

As Autism Rates Soar, Parents and Scientists Seek Answers

The data, gathered in 2019 and 2020, came from the U.S. National Health Interview Survey, and revealed that out of 12,554 children surveyed in 2019 and 2020, 410 were diagnosed with autism.

The overall prevalence of autism in 2019 was 2.79%, increasing to 3.49% in 2020, which represents a 53% increase since 2017.

The study also revealed that autism prevalence increased from 2014 to 2016, decreased from 2016 to 2017, and then increased from 2017 to 2020. The stark rise in autism rates in the U.S. is difficult to ignore, but what’s driving the increase remains a mystery.

Peiter “Mudge” Zatko, the company’s former head of security who reported directly to the CEO, claimed that leadership misled board members and government officials about potential vulnerabilities that left the platform open to hacking, foreign manipulation, and spying. He also claimed that one or more current employees are working for a foreign intelligence agency.

Litigation by Leak: Government Officials Leak New Details on the Mar-a-Lago Raid While Continuing to Oppose Disclosures in Court

One of the most glaring contradictions in the Mar-a-Lago controversy has been the Justice Department demanding absolute and unwavering secrecy over the FBI raid while officials have been leaking details on the raid.

The latest example is a report in the New York Times that the Justice Department recovered more than 300 documents with classified markings, citing multiple sources connected to the investigation. Most judges would be a tad annoyed by the contradiction as the government continues to frame the public debate with its own selective leaks while using secrecy to bar other disclosures.

That includes sections of the affidavit that detail the communications with the Trump team, information that is already known to the target.

Someone is clearly lying.

The Trump Team said that it was cooperating and would have given access to the government if it raised further objections. The Justice Department has clearly indicated that time was of the essence to justify this unprecedented raid on the home of a former president.

Yet, Attorney General Merrick Garland reportedly waited for weeks to sign off on the application for a warrant and the FBI then waited a weekend to execute that warrant. It is difficult to understand why such communications could not be released in a redacted affidavit while protecting more sensitive sections.

Taiwan warns China of ‘heavy price’ for invasion on battle anniversary

TAIPEI, Taiwan – Taiwan is determined to defend itself and invaders will incur a “heavy price”, President Tsai Ing-wen said on Tuesday, August 23, on the anniversary of a confrontation six decades ago in which Taiwanese forces beat back Chinese attackers.

Meeting military officers, Tsai extolled the “spirit” of defending against China’s more than a month of bombardment of the Taiwan-controlled islands of Kinmen and Matsu, just off the Chinese coast, which started in late August 1958.

Meeting earlier in the day with a delegation of former US officials now at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, including Matt Pottinger, former US President Donald Trump’s deputy national security adviser, Tsai said that the 1958 battle paved the way for today’s Taiwan.

Two major military exercises threaten to raise tensions with China and North Korea

A large-scale multinational air force exercise led by the U.S. and Australia got underway in Northern Australia, with Germany taking part for the first time in what an analyst calls a “greater response from Europe” to security challenges in Asia.

At the same time, the U.S. and South Korea began their biggest combined military exercise in four years on Monday as tensions remain high in the region after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. 

Exercise Pitch Black, which has been held every two years since 1981 but was paused for four years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, has come back with more participating countries than ever.

Three first-timers, Germany, Japan and South Korea, are among the 17 nations taking part.  They have sent 100 aircraft and 2,500 personnel to take part in drills that are taking place from Aug. 19 until Sept. 8.
