Truck crash involving a hundred monkeys sparks fears of infection. Woman who helped monkeys in Pennsylvania crash experiencing health issues: report
The day following the accident, Fallon suddenly developed a cough and pink-eye, which became so bad that she had to visit the emergency room at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
Michele Fallon, who was exposed to the monkeys on Friday after the crash said she is experiencing some side effects in her eye and has begun a course of preventative rabies treatment
On her Facebook page, Fallon said her symptoms were like those from COVID-19.

The truck had been on its way to a lab at the time of the crash.
The location of the lab and the type of research for which the monkeys were destined weren’t clear, but the cynomolgus monkeys are often used in medical studies.
The monkey isn’t just dangerous, it’s expensive – crab-eating macaques can cost up to £10,000, according
to The New York Times.

Contracting the B virus is extremely rare, but it can lead to severe brain damage or death if you do not get treatment immediately.
People typically get infected with B virus if they are bitten or scratched by an infected macaque monkey, or have contact with the monkey’s eyes, nose, or mouth.
You may develop small blisters in the wound or area on your body that had contact with the monkey.
The monkeys, whose DNA is similar to that of humans, have been in high demand amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with some scientists calling for an emergency reserve of the test subjects similar to the country’s stockpiles of oil and grain.

A suspect who was bonded out of jail by family members after being charged with stabbing a Houston Police Department K-9 dog over the weekend is now being sought as a person of interest in the death of his father, whose body was found early Tuesday, hidden in the garage of his home, police say.
Ryan Smith, 26, remains on the run after crashing his father’s truck during an overnight police pursuit and disappearing into the woods near Houston’s sprawling Memorial Park, according to investigators.
“Given his previous charge – and what we are looking at now, I think it goes without saying that he has tendency for violence,” Cmdr. Kevin Deese told reporters. “So we have been in contact with other family members who aren’t in this area to put them on notice.”
Florida undercover deputies involved in shooting at mall after gun deal operation turns into armed robbery
The shooting unfolded around 4 p.m. outside the Westfield Brandon Mall while an undercover detective with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was meeting with two suspects at a pre-arranged location in attempt to buy firearms, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
The sheriff’s office released video of the transaction taking place inside the undercover detective’s vehicle, showing the suspects attempting to rob him at gunpoint.
Undercover deputies waiting nearby then moved in toward the vehicle to help the detective, the sheriff’s office said.
DC-area students tweet about high school shooting instead of dialing 911: police
The shooting happened Friday afternoon at Magruder High School in Montgomery County, which eliminated its school resource officer program at the start of the school year last fall.
Jones left the decision on whether those bystanders would face disciplinary action up to the school district but issued a call to action for parents and law enforcement to talk to students about the importance of cooperating with authorities and helping their classmates.
“It is wiser to get people the help started that they need rather than being the superstar on Twitter that day,” he said. “That’s a reality we need to have a real conversation with our young people about. There is a place for social media. But then there’s a time and a place when we need to help our fellow man.”
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich announced in March that school resource officers would no longer be stationed inside every school building in the county at the start of the school year after summer break, instead community resource officers would be assigned to groups of schools in the same geographic areas and would respond to individual incidents as needed, Bethesda Magazine reported.

Nashville resident Pat Raynor opened a state-licensed salon in her home after her husband passed away. The county shut her down after an anonymous complaint.
The reason? The county has an ordinance making it illegal for some—but not all—home businesses to serve clients in the home. Pat fought back with the Institute for Justice (IJ) and her case reached the Tennessee Supreme Court. In 2020, the county passed an ordinance to temporarily allow Pat and other home business owners to host clients, but that reprieve expires in 2023.

House Democrats exit list grows to 29 as longtime Rep. Jim Cooper of Tennessee announces retirement
Cooper, the dean of Tennessee’s congressional delegation and a member of the Democrats’ Blue Dog Coalition of moderate representatives, has served in Congress since 1983.
He becomes the 29th House Democrat this cycle to announce they’ll retire or seek a different office in this year’s elections. Fourteen House Republicans are either retiring or running for a different office.
“Today I am announcing that I will not run for re-election to Congress. After 32 years in office, I will be leaving Congress next year,” Cooper wrote on Twitter. “I cannot thank the people of Nashville enough. You backed me more than almost anyone in Tennessee history.”
Cooper’s announcement comes after the GOP-dominated Tennessee legislature voted to severely alter his Nashville-based district, taking a blue-leaning seat and dividing it among three districts, The congressman cited redistricting as a key reason for his decision.
