Guaranteed income program for Black women launching in Atlanta in honor of MLK

A guaranteed income program for Black women is launching in Atlanta’s Old 4th Ward, Martin Luther King Jr.’s hometown, in honor of the civil rights activist.

King was one of the first major leaders to call for guaranteed income in the United States, saying, “The dignity of the individual will flourish when the decisions concerning his life are in his own hands.”

From these words — and with the aid of community leaders, such as the current pastor of King’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, Rev. John Vaughn — GiveDirectly and the GRO Fund are launching In Her Hands, the South’s largest guaranteed income program.

Starting in the Old 4th Ward and then expected to expand to additional predominantly Black suburban and rural areas in the state, In Her Hands will provide about 650 Black women monthly payments of $850 for two years.

Twitter locked out January 6th defense lawyer, gave no reason

The suspension was announced on Twitter by conservative commentator Jack Posobiec. According to the screenshots he shared, Medvin’s account was suspended for violating Twitter rules.

But the platform did not specify what rules she violated. The space where Twitter specifies what rules a user has violated was blank.

Twitter threatened the lawyer that: “Please note that repeated violations may lead to a permanent suspension of your account. Proceed to Twitter now to fix the problem with your account.”

But there was no way to “fix the problem” because Twitter did not specify what she was supposed to do to fix her account.

Hannah Tubbs, who is biologically male, has pleaded guilty to choking the girl in a bathroom stall, shoving her hands into the girl’s pants and sexually assaulting her.

Tubbs was only linked to the crime in 2019 through a DNA match. The crime was so notorious at the time that the L.A. County Board of Supervisors issued a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest,” the Los Angeles Times notes.

But now Gascón may seek a lenient sentence because of his blanket policy of not trying “juveniles” as adults. Tubbs may only receive probation, or could even be sentenced to a brief stay at a juvenile detention center.

FTC Investigates Facebook’s VR Business

The investigation reportedly focuses primarily on whether Facebook’s VR division has used its dominant market position to shut down competitors. Virtual Reality has become a key part of the future of Facebook as it focuses on the development of the metaverse digital landscape.

The metaverse focuses on the use of VR and AR technology to experience a digital world with Facebook banking on the virtual landscape becoming the future of social media. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated that the company which has rebranded as “Meta’ would consist of two main bousinesses, its traditional social media platform, and its Reality Labs AR and VR division.

Andrew Bosworth, the head of Reality Labs, stated in October that the Oculus brand would be dissolved and the company would begin renaming the Oculus Quest heads the Meta Quest in “early 2022.”

Facebook is already facing scrutiny from the FTC in relation to antitrust allegations and last week a judge ruled that a major FTC antitrust lawsuit against the firm could proceed.

30 Migrants Found in Truck, 20 More in Texas Motel near Border

Laredo Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Carl E. Landrum tweeted images from a disrupted human smuggling attempt in South Texas. Texas DPS and Border Patrol agents stopped a commercial tractor. During the interview, the driver absconded from the truck.

Agents found nearly 30 migrants with no authorization to be in the United States hiding in the sleeping compartment of the tractor. The agents and troopers carried out a search and found the driver, arresting him for human smuggling.

Two days later, Chief Landrum tweeted images from a motel being used as a human smuggling stash house. Laredo Sector Intelligence agents teamed up with Texas DPS troopers to interdict the human smuggling attempt where more than 20 migrants were stashed in motel rooms.

NYC shooter poses as delivery worker during Manhattan doorstep murder, sources say

NYPD video footage shows the suspect walking into the building carrying a blue bag in his right hand and a white one in his left hand.

The video then cuts to show the suspect running out of the building carrying only the blue bag. He was also seen wearing a white helmet and a black and yellow vest, and riding a red e-bike.

The victim – 30-year-old Davon Venable – was shot multiple times when he opened the door to his apartment, police said. He was rushed to a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds to his back and neck, but could not be saved.

The woman, later identified as Robin Baucom, was a manager at a Cracker Barrel in north Harris County, near Houston, outlets reported.

Early in the morning on Saturday, Jan. 15, two people in a Dodge Charger pulled up near the entrance to the restaurant, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a tweet. It was before opening, and as an employee was trying to get inside, a man got out of the Charger and tried to steal her purse.

Baucom saw what was happening and went to unlock the front door to let her coworker inside, and away from the robber, according to Gonzalez.

Security officer stabbed, then fatally shoots attacker at club beneath Prime and Proper in Downtown Detroit

Detroit police said preliminary information showed there was an altercation between a restaurant employee and the person who ultimately stabbed him about 12:10 a.m. Sunday. The employee then shot the 52-year-old attacker, fatally wounding him.

A restaurant spokesman said the altercation happened at “Cash Only” club, which is in the basement of Prime and Proper. He said the employee is a security officer with a third-party security contractor.

The restaurant spokesman also said the security officer was in stable condition as of Sunday afternoon after undergoing emergency surgery at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Georgia man accused of shooting 2 deputies is arrested following 5-day manhunt

Tyler Keith Henderson, 25, was on the run for more than five days before he was taken into custody by authorities in Thomas County, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. 

Henderson, a convicted felon, is accused of firing at three deputies around midnight Tuesday in Ochlocknee, about 50 miles northwest of Valdosta, the sheriff’s office said. 

Two of the deputies were struck by gunfire, according to authorities. Both were in stable condition following the shooting. 

Alabama bowling alley shooting suspect who killed 1, injured 6 bonds out of jail twice

Tory Johnson, 23, was released from the Montgomery County Detention Facility Saturday morning. He has been charged with murder, two counts of first-degree assault and four counts of second-degree assault in the Jan. 9 shooting.

Police investigation revealed an argument between two people inside the bowling alley turned physical, leading to the shooting. A police officer was working in an off-duty capacity at the scene, along with a private security guard employed by the business.

Within seconds of the shooting, the officer and other people rendered to those injured first, while the officer called for backup. It’s believed Johnson took off while other officers were arriving on the scene.

Suspect Gets Shot After Advancing Towards LAPD Officers With a Knife

While the officers were at the location, the suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Rosendo Olivio Jr., approached the officers armed with a folding knife in one hand and a butane torch lighter in the other. Olivio was yelling profanities and threatening to burn down the apartment building.

Olivio was ordered to drop the knife; however, he ignored the officer’s commands and continued to approach them while still holding the knife, resulting in an officer-involved shooting..

NYC Subway Terror: Woman pushed in front of train | LiveNOW from FOX

A Manhattan woman was killed after a man pushed her in front of an oncoming subway train in Times Square Saturday morning, authorities say.

According to the NYPD, the victim, 40-year-old Michelle Alyssa Go, died when a man shoved her onto the tracks in front of a southbound R train, which struck and killed her.

The suspect has been identified as 61-year-old Simon Martial, a reportedly homeless man with an extensive criminal history dating back to the 1990s.

VIDEO: Man Allegedly Sucker Punches 79-Year-Old in NYC

The footage showed the suspect arriving on a motorized scooter and leaving it on the side of the road. He approached the sidewalk where the victim was standing holding a cane near another person.

The man scanned the area, then apparently hit the victim in the head with his fist, according to the clip. The victim fell on the pavement and the suspect went back to the scooter and fled.

The victim received treatment at the scene regarding a head injury, officers noted.

The elderly man was later identified as Ralph Belgrove, and the man on the scooter identified as 29-year-old Disheem Riley, according to the Daily Mail.

Lawmaker seeks to divert illegal immigrants released in Pennsylvania to Delaware

State Sen. Mario Scavello, R-Scotrun, filed a memorandum seeking co-sponsors for a bill to relocate illegal immigrants transported to Pennsylvania by the federal government to Delaware, as well as a state ban on working with federal contractors that transport illegal immigrants to Pennsylvania.

Scavello pointed to federal immigration policy, and specifically recent news reports of transports of illegal immigrants to Pennsylvania, as the impetus behind the proposed legislation.

“The federal government has relocated an unknown number of illegal immigrants to states across the nation, including Pennsylvania, and at the same time they have failed to provide information that ensures the safety of Pennsylvania citizens,” Scavello wrote in the memo.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has encountered nearly 1.8 million migrants at the southwest border since President Joe Biden took office, with an unknown number released into the country through the Office of Refugee Resettlement. The Department of Health and Human Services also places migrant children from the border throughout the country.

North Korea Fires 2 Missiles From Pyongyang Airport, South Korea Says

In less than two weeks, nuclear-armed North Korea has conducted three other missile tests, an unusual frequency of launches. Two of those involved single “hypersonic missiles” capable of high speeds and maneuvering after launch, while the last, on Friday, involved a pair of short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) fired from train cars.

Monday’s launch appeared to involve two SRBMs fired east from Sunan Airfield in Pyongyang, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

North Korea has defended the missile tests as its sovereign right to self-defense and accused the United States of intentionally escalating the situation with new sanctions.

British Police Arrest 2 Teens in Connection with US Synagogue Standoff

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement that Counter Terror Policing officers detained two teenagers in South Manchester and that they remained in custody for questioning. There were no details about any possible charges.

U.S. authorities earlier Sunday identified 44-year-old Malik Faisal Akram, a British citizen, as the man who took four people hostage at Congregation Beth Israel, near Fort Worth, Texas.

The standoff lasted for 10 hours before law enforcement commandos stormed the building. All the hostages were freed, and an FBI strategic weapons team shot Akram dead.

Gang ‘sexually abused eight girls as young as 12’, court hears

A gang of six men sexually exploited and abused vulnerable young girls after luring them over Facebook with the promise of drink and drugs, a court heard.

The group are accused of forcing the underage victims – aged between 12 and 15 – to engage in sexual activity between 2013 and 2017.

A court heard the men committed the offences against eight girls under the age of 16 in the Redditch area of Worcestershire.

Abdul Hussain, 21, Usmaan Asghar, 22, Arslan Tazarab, 25, Ethashan Tazarab, 21, Usman Ali, 28 and Numan Mohammed, 23, went on trial at Worcester Crown Court.
