US News:
People under domestic violence orders can own guns -U.S. appeals court rules

Feb 2 (Reuters) – A U.S. appeals court on Thursday declared unconstitutional a federal law making it a crime for people under domestic violence restraining orders to own firearms.
The decision by a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is the latest victory for gun rights advocates since a Supreme Court decision last June granting a broad right for people to carry firearms outside the home.
That decision, New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, announced a new test for assessing firearms laws, saying restrictions must be “consistent with this nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation,” and not simply advance an important government interest.
In Thursday’s decision, Circuit Judge Cory Wilson said banning people under domestic violence restraining orders from owning firearms “embodies salutory policy goals meant to protect vulnerable people in our society.”
But the judge, appointed by Donald Trump, said Bruen made such a consideration irrelevant, and that from a historical perspective the ban was “an outlier that our ancestors would never have accepted.”
The court threw out the guilty plea and six-year prison sentence for Zackey Rahimi, who admitted to possessing guns found in his Kennedale, Texas, home after prosecutors said he participated in five shootings in Dec. 2020 and Jan. 2021.
Owner of famed Ray’s Candy Store brutally assaulted outside NYC shop

The 90-year-old owner of the famed Ray’s Candy Store was brutally assaulted outside his East Village shop — leaving him with a black eye and a nasty cut on his face, police and reports said Thursday.
Local blog EV Grieve posted a photo of Alvarez, who has run the shop for 50 years, with a black eye and gash on his temple.
Police released a surveillance image of a man wanted in the attack, showing him dressed all in black and pushing a purple shopping cart filled with random items.
Last year, patrons raised $50,000 to help pay overdue bills and keep the store peddling sweets when it was on the verge of shutting down.
Alvarez, a former Iranian sailor whose birth name is Asghar Ghahraman, was paying $125 in rent when he first opened — but said the monthly price tag is up to nearly $6,200.
Cash-strapped Americans being squeezed by higher prices are tapping into their 401(k) accounts for financial emergencies – like medical bills or to avoid foreclosure:

The Internal Revenue Service allows Americans going through economic hardships to withdraw some of their 401(k) retirement money early – but figures show more people are using this service now than in previous years.
Before the pandemic, the average number of people dipping into their 401(k) Vanguard Group account was two percent – roughly 100,000 of the investment company’s five million clients.
This rose to 2.1 percent in 2021, which is equivalent to about 105,000 people.
But the latest figures from 2022 show that this number has jumped to 140,000 – which is 2.8 percent of the total number of people who use Vanguard’s 401(k) service.
Masks make ‘little to no difference’ to Covid infections or deaths

Masks made ‘little to no difference’ to Covid infection or death rates, according to one of the most comprehensive meta-analyses of face coverings.
The research – carried out by the Cochrane Institute, the ‘gold standard’ of evidence-based reviews – looked at 78 global studies involving over a million people.
Results indicated that surgical masks reduced the risk of catching ‘Covid or a flu-like illness’ by just five percent – a figure so low it may not be statistically significant.
The researchers said harms caused by masks – including hampering children’s schooling – were poorly measured in the studies, meaning any small benefit on infection rates may be outweighed.
Professor Francois Balloux, a professor of computational biology at University College London, who was not part of the analysis, said it showed that the benefit of wearing masks is ‘at best small’.
Report: FBI Investigating Santos Fundraiser for Veteran’s Sick Dog

NEW YORK — Federal authorities are investigating a military veteran’s claim that U.S. Rep. George Santos raised $3,000 for life-saving surgery for his pet dog several years ago, then never turned over the money for the animal’s care, according to a published report.
U.S. Navy veteran Richard Osthoff told Politico on Wednesday that two FBI agents contacted him after he went public last month with his story about his experiences with Santos in 2016.
Osthoff told the news site he gave the agents text messages he exchanged with Santos, who at the time was going by the name Anthony Devolder.
“I’m glad to get the ball rolling with the bigwigs,” Osthoff said. “I was worried that what happened to me was too long ago to be prosecuted.”
The local news site Patch reported last month that Osthoff, now 47, was living in a roadside tent in Howell, New Jersey, in May 2016 when his pit bull mix, Sapphire, developed a life-threatening stomach tumor.
Air Force intel officer kept hundreds of classified docs, faces prison

Court documents say that in 2017, one year before Lt. Col. Robert Birchum’s retirement, Air Force special investigators found 135 documents “containing classified national defense information” on a thumb drive at his home in Tampa, Florida, Military.com reported.
Six days later, they found a personal hard drive with 117 more classified national defense files, and another 28 paper documents with secret information were found in a Tampa storage unit four days after that, court documents say, according to Military.com.
The thumb drive had two presentations about the National Security Agency’s targets and data collection methods, which could “cause exceptionally grave damage” to U.S. national security, according to court documents.
Bob Woodward’s scathing remarks on media’s Russiagate coverage largely met with silence from NY Times, WaPo

Veteran journalist Bob Woodward’s scathing remarks about the media’s handling of the Russiagate saga and the Christopher Steele dossier were largely met with silence in the industry this week.
Woodward was one of several major figures who spoke to the Columbia Journalism Review for a postmortem of sorts – published this week after 18 months of work – on the sprawling Donald Trump-Russia collusion allegation story that consumed American media for years.
Woodward, the legendary Washington Post reporter who helped break the Watergate scandal in the 1970s and conducted a series of eye-popping interviews with President Trump, said news coverage of the Russia inquiry “wasn’t handled well” and that he thought viewers and readers had been “cheated.”
He also claimed in the report that he’d warned Washington Post reporters working on Russia collusion stories about why he had publicly criticized the Christopher Steele dossier in 2017 as a “gar
‘Dances With Wolves’ actor Nathan Chasing Horse told wives to ‘shoot it out’ if police came to house: report

Accused of multiple sex crimes, Chasing Horse, 46, was taken into custody at his Las Vegas residence on Tuesday.
Formal charges have not been filed yet, but the actor is facing one count of sexual assault of a child younger than 16, one count of child abuse or neglect, one count of sexual assault and two counts of sex trafficking.
He also instructed his wives to take “suicide pills” if that plan failed, which were small white pills, according to information given to police by two women.
A former wife also said she believed Chasing Horse’s current wives would carry out his instructions if police arrested him.
Train Mechanic Sacrifices Life To Protect Commuter From Shooter

A man fatally shot a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) employee who intervened to protect a woman in a D.C. station Wednesday morning, according to law enforcement.
Authorities explained the gunman, who investigators identified as 31-year-old Isaiah Trotman, went into the Potomac Avenue Metro Station and shot a commuter after shooting a different commuter he had just disputed with on a bus, CNN reported.
The gunman subsequently shot power department mechanic Robert Cunningham when he attempted to intervene as the gunman aimed at a female commuter.

Hunter Biden finally admits infamous laptop is his as he pleads for criminal probe

The revelation came in a petulant letter from Hunter’s lawyers seeking a criminal probe into what they called attempts to “weaponize” its contents.
In the 14-page letter to Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings, Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell claimed that repair shop owner John Paul Mac Isaac “unlawfully” accessed Hunter’s laptop data and worked with former President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani to “weaponize” sordid and incriminating contents on it against Joe Biden.
“I think with Congress starting investigations next week, it’s a scare tactic,” Mac Isaac told The Post Wednesday.
“The flak is heaviest when you are over the target!” he added.
The House Oversight Committee will commence hearings next week on Hunter Biden’s alleged influence peddling, and claims he cashed in on ties to his then-vice president father to rake in millions from foreign companies, Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), the chairman of the panel, told the National Press Club on Monday.
11 U.S. Cities Run by Democrats Listed Among 50 Most Dangerous in World

Eleven U.S. cities rank among the 50 most dangerous in the world, according to a recent report published by Numbeo, a global quality of life database. All 11 are governed by Democratic mayors.
Three U.S. cities — Baltimore, Memphis and Detroit — are ranked among the 20 most dangerous cities on the planet.
The three cities have more in common than just violent crime. All three are run by Democrats.
Baltimore ranks #15 on the annual dangerous cities list, with Memphis and Detroit close behind at #18 and #19, respectively.
NJ GOP lawmaker shot dead outside home

Police said they believed Dwumfour to be the target of the shooting, but any possible motive has not yet been made public in the ongoing investigation, WABC reported.
The shooting took place outside the luxury rental complex where Dwumfour lived, near a road called Samuel Circle, NJ.com reported. A neighbor, Alexandra Bryan, told the New York Times the residential complex was “really nice.”
Dwumfour, 30, was serving her first term as a councilor in Sayreville, a borough of about 45,000 people about 30 miles south of Manhattan. A newcomer to politics, she unseated a Democratic opponent when she was elected in 2021, according to Tapinto.net.

Poland Expands Defense Budget as Russo-Ukrainian Conflict Rages

This could give Poland the largest army in the European Union (EU), with its spending rivaling that of the United States.
According to the BBC, Poland currently has a military budget of less than 2.5 percent of their GDP. However, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced his intention to increase the budget to four percent of GDP this year.
“The war in Ukraine makes us arm ourselves even faster.
That is why, this year, we will make an unprecedented effort: [four percent] of GDP for the Polish army,” Morawiecki told reporters.
Warsaw also intends to spend $100 billion on its military, already purchasing tanks and artillery from the U.S. and South Korea for $10 billion, the Anadolu Agency reported.
European Union Doubles to 30,000 Number of Ukraine Forces to Equip

The 27-nation bloc set up a strategy for Ukrainian forces in November with the initial target of training 15,000.
“This will be reached probably before the end of the second quarter of this year and there will be a new additional target of a further 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers trained by various European countries,” an EU official said.
The increased figure to be formally announced at an EU-Ukraine summit in Kyiv on Friday comes as European supporters step up their military support.
Several EU nations have promised to provide German-made Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv and are already training Ukrainian troops to use them.
It is unclear if that training is covered by the EU program.
The EU training is being carried out across multiple European countries, with its headquarters in Ukraine’s neighbour Poland.
North Korea Warns of ‘Overwhelming Nuclear Force’ to Counter US

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea said Thursday it’s prepared to counter U.S. military moves with the “most overwhelming nuclear force” as it warned that the expansion of the United States’ military exercises with rival South Korea is pushing tensions to an “extreme red line.”
The statement by Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry came in response to comments by U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who said Tuesday in Seoul that the United States would increase its deployment of advanced military assets to the Korean Peninsula, including fighter jets and aircraft carriers, as it strengthens joint training and operational planning with South Korea.
South Korea’s security jitters have risen since North Korea test-fired dozens of missiles in 2022, including potentially nuclear-capable ones designed to strike targets in South Korea and the U.S. mainland.
South Korea’s Defense Ministry said the United States flew B-1B bombers and F-22 and F-35 fighter jets in an exercise Wednesday with South Korean fighters above South Korea’s western waters. The United States and South Korea are also planning to a joint simulation this month aimed at sharpening their response if North Korea uses nuclear weapons.
US to Widen Military Presence in Philippines Amid China Fear

MANILA, Philippines — The United States and the Philippines announced an expansion of America’s military presence in the Southeast Asian country on Thursday, with U.S. forces granted access to four more military camps, effectively giving Washington new ground to ramp up deterrence against China.
The agreement between the longtime allies was made public during the visit of U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, who has led efforts to strengthen America’s security alliances in Asia in the face of China’s increasing assertiveness toward Taiwan and territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
The allies also said that “substantial” progress has been made in projects at five Philippine military bases, where U.S. military personnel were earlier granted access by Filipino officials. Construction of American facilities at those locations has been underway for years but has been hampered by unspecified local issues.

EU Central Bank Set to Outdo U.S. Fed with Interest Rate Hike

ECB President Christine Lagarde has made clear that a rate hike of half a percentage point is in the offing at the bank’s meeting Thursday “and possibly at the one after that, and possibly thereafter.”
The ECB started raising rates in July, four months after the Fed did, and from lower levels – including below zero for one of its key benchmarks. That means Europe’s bank may have further to go before it feels rates are high enough to cool off inflation – even though economic growth has slowed.
Officials said at their last meeting in December that rates will need to “rise significantly” to control inflation, which reached 8.5 per cent in the 20 countries using the euro in January. That is well above the bank’s target of 2 per cent considered best for the economy.
Canada Bracing for Another Food Price Increase as Holiday Price Freeze Ends

Canadians can expect to pay more — a lot more — at the grocery store in the coming days after a holiday price freeze, implemented by some of Canada’s largest grocery stores late last year, expires.
Loblaws, Canada’s largest grocer, that saw its share price surge over the course of the pandemic and is feilding accusations of price gouging and unfair profiteering amidst record high inflation announced last fall that it would freeze prices on hundreds of its No Name brand items in an effort to help Canadians grappling with the surge in food prices.
However, it was quickly pointed out that it is industry standard to freeze prices over the holiday season as suppliers refuse to accept price hikes during the critical shopping season.
Bank of England Hikes Interest Rates Amid Inflation Crisis

The bank’s monetary policy committee voted 7-2 to push its key rate to 4 per cent, approving the 10th consecutive rate increase since a post-pandemic surge in the world economy and Russia’s war in Ukraine drove inflation to 40-year highs.
Economists suggest this may be the last big rate increase for Britain’s central bank after inflation slowed to 10.5 per cent in December from a peak of 11.1 per cent two months earlier. It forecast a fall to about 4 per cent by the end of the year.
“We have done a lot on rates already. The full effect of that is still to come through, but it is too soon to declare victory just yet,” bank Gov. Andrew Bailey said at a news conference. He added, “We have seen a turning of the corner, but it’s very early days and the risks are very large.”
PICS: French Navy Seizes Missiles, Guns En Route to Yemen from Iran

While Iran did not immediately acknowledge the seizure, images of the weapons released by the U.S. military’s Central Command showed them to be similar to others captured by American forces in other shipments tied back to Tehran.
The announcement comes as Iran faces increasing Western pressure over its shipment of drones to arm Russia during its war on Ukraine, as well as for its violent monthslong crackdown targeting protesters.
Regional tensions also have heightened after a suspected Israeli drone attack on a military workshop in the central Iranian city of Isfahan.
Previous cycles of violence since the collapse of Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers have seen the Islamic Republic launch retaliatory attacks at sea.
China Says Cloned ‘Super Cows’ Produce Abnormally Large Amounts of Milk

Chinese state-affiliated media, Ningxia Daily, reported that right before Chinese New Year the three cloned calves were born in the Ningxia region.
The animals were cloned from “super cows” that have the ability to produce an unusually large quantity of milk, the Chinese tabloid Global Times sets out.
The chosen beasts are capable of producing 18 tons of milk per year, or 100 tons of milk in their lifetimes.
That is nearly 1.7 times the amount of milk an average cow in the U.S. produced in 2021, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Only five in 10,000 of common cattle breeds in China can produce as much milk as a super cow, the scientists told the Times.

Biden’s new adviser is a climate alarmist who claimed to have suffered an ‘acute mental health crisis’ as a result of Trump’s 2016 victory

Joining the board Thursday per President Joe Biden’s apparent wishes: Kim Cobb, a climate alarmist who was admittedly left bedridden as a result of the American people’s election of former President Donald Trump in 2016.
Cobb is a climate scientist who has repeatedly appeared on CNN to discuss the specter of anthropogenic climate change. She co-authored an alarmist UN report in 2021 that simultaneously held that various allegedly man-made climate trends under way are now irreversible and it is still imperative that the world transition off fossil fuels.
Extra to her background in politically charged weather science, Cobb also “champions diversity and inclusion in all that she does … and enjoys frequent exchanges with policymakers about climate impacts and solutions,” according to the White House.
Outside her past role as ADVANCE professor for diversity, equity, and inclusion, Cobb has made a show of her ideological bona fides on Twitter, where she has underscored her support for BLM; her belief that “racial justice and equity are inseparable from climate action”; and her support for hiring on the basis of skin pigmentation or sexual preference
Sen. Cruz Introduces Bill Limiting US Senators to Two Terms
The bill would be constructed as a constitutional amendment that would not only limit U.S. senators to two terms but also limit House representatives to three two-year terms.
Cruz laid out his plans in a statement that said in part, “Term limits are critical to fixing what’s wrong with Washington, D.C.
Cruz’s initiative mirrors former President Donald Trump’s aversion to establishment politicians appealing to modern populism.
Trump sought to set a three-term cap for House members and a two-term cap for senators.
The bill is believed not to be able to garner much support in Congress, as it has been Cruz’s fourth attempt to introduce it, receiving not one vote from the House or the Senate.
House GOP Votes to Oust Democrat Omar From Foreign Affairs Committee

House Republicans voted after a raucous debate Thursday to oust Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar from the chamber’s major Foreign Affairs Committee, citing her anti-Israel comments, in a dramatic escalation of tensions after Democrats last session booted GOP lawmakers from committees.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was able to solidify Republican support against the Somali-born Muslim woman in the new Congress despite the reservations of some GOP lawmakers.
Removal of lawmakers from House committees was essentially unprecedented until the Democrat ousters two years ago of Republican Reps. Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia and Paul Gosar of Arizona.

Gavin Newsom Responds to Mass Shootings by Limiting Concealed Carry

The Sacramento Bee reported Newsom is rallying behind Senate Bill 2, which tightens concealed carry permit issuance requirements in response to the Supreme Court of the United States’ Bruen (2022) decision.
That decision struck down New York’s proper cause requirement for concealed carry permit issuance, which, as result, also gutted California’s “good cause” requirement.
Senate Bill 2 intends to put forward other requirements for concealed carry permit issuance, such as “new age restrictions, impose strict gun storage and training mandates and [limits on] where permit holders could carry firearms in public.”
Breitbart News noted CNN’s report that California witnessed four mass shootings last week. The first two of those shootings, Monterey Park (11 killed) and Half Moon Day (7 killed), were carried out with pistols. But the state’s concealed carry law did not play into either incident.
The second two shootings–one in Oakland (eight shot, one fatally) and one just outside Beverly Hill (three killed)–were not tied to concealed carry either.
California Tries to Blame Trump for $30 Billion in Unemployment Fraud

Ironically, it was Democrats, and not the Trump administration, that insisted on distributing coronavirus relief through state unemployment systems, rather than simply using checks from the federal government. They were acting on advice from liberal economists who wanted to see unemployment expanded as a welfare system.
The New York Times reported:
Democrats argued that Congress should focus on narrowly tailored measures that could be delivered quickly.
“We asked the economists what really can stimulate the economy fast, and there were things like food stamps — because people would spend that fast — unemployment insurance, refundable tax credits,” Ms. Pelosi said. “What we are doing has to be related to the coronavirus crisis.”
On Wednesday, Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) argued that Republicans are singling out Democrat-governed states like California and New York for investigation, while ignoring fraud in conservative states.
GOP Sens. Introduce National Reciprocity for Concealed Carry

The Senate bill, titled the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, makes the concealed carry permit of any given state valid in other states while also preserving the specific rules that exist in each state.
This means a concealed carry permit holder from Kentucky would be able to carry a gun for self-defense while traveling through Illinois but would have to adhere to Illinois’ prohibitions against carrying in certain areas.
Sen. Kennedy commented on the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, saying,
“The Second Amendment helps safeguard all of Americans’ constitutional rights. This bill would affirm Americans’ fundamental liberties while respecting individual states’ rights to establish their own laws.”
Exclusive: Conservatives to ‘Use the Levers of Government,’ Dismantle ‘Permanent D.C.’ in 2025

Trump came into office with no previous experience in elected office, which “in many ways was a strength,” but many of the roadblocks put up by Barack Obama administration officials “underscore the importance of conservatives understanding how to navigate the bureaucracy.”
When Trump took office, Sally Yates, who had been Deputy Attorney General under Obama, became acting Attorney General.
“Within the first few days of the [Trump] administration, she instructed her department, the Department of Justice, not to defend an executive order that the president had signed,” Chretien said. “That was an early indication of just how steep the resistance was going to be among the career federal employees and the deep state.”
It was not just Democrat holdovers who were acting against the interests of the president. Some of Trump’s policy goals were not popular among many Republicans either.
“President Trump was was keenly interested in bringing back manufacturing jobs to this country through the imposition of tariffs, and he was open about that — he supported that throughout the campaign,” Chretien explained. “And yet, even the political appointees sometimes would undermine efforts to to enact those tariffs.”
When asked how the United States government had gotten to the point where the bureaucracy is powerful enough to undermine the authority of an elected president, Chretien said, “We’ve gotten here because the permanent political class, the permanent D.C. federal employees, are there at their agencies every day through Republican and Democratic presidents, alike.”
“They know how the game is played,” he continued. “It’s also the combination of the strength of the civil service unions and their allies in Congress and other federal regulations. And the media as well has played a part in this, because they have created this impression that federal employees are untouchable and can’t be removed from their positions.”
House Oversight sets hearing with former Twitter execs after Hunter Biden’s bombshell laptop admission

The House Oversight and Accountability Committee has set a hearing for next week to investigate Big Tech censorship of the Biden family’s business “schemes,” following an admission Wednesday evening from Hunter Biden’s attorneys that the laptop does in fact belong to President Biden’s son.
The hearing titled “Protecting Speech from Government Interference and Social Media Bias, Part 1: Twitter’s Role in Suppressing the Biden Laptop Story,” will be held Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. EST.
“Americans deserve answers about this attack on the First Amendment and why Big Tech and the Swamp colluded to censor this information about the Biden family selling access for profit. Accountability is coming,” Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
Energy Department proposes tighter efficiency standards for gas, electric stoves and ovens

The proposed regulations come just weeks after the Biden White House was forced to clarify the president does not support a ban on gas stoves following public outcry after a consumer product safety official suggested that option was “on the table.”
In a notice of proposed rulemaking, the Energy Department said it has “tentatively concluded” new energy conservation standards for stove appliances would be technologically feasible and economically justified. The agency proposed new limitations on how much energy electric stove tops (both coil and smooth) and gas cooking tops may consume in a year.
In a shift, the Energy Department proposes to end the prohibition on constant burning pilot lights in gas stoves, but says a stove with a constant burning pilot light would not meet the new efficiency standards.

Whitlock: ‘American Woman’ created the ‘Passport Bros’

Not long after divorcing American actress Lisa Bonet, a star of “The Cosby Show” at the time, Kravitz dated a series of white foreign starlets – French singer and model Vanessa Paradis, Brazilian model Adriana Lima, and Australian actress Nicole Kidman.
I bring all this up because things have turned so icy between black American men and women that there’s now a popular movement called “Passport Bros,” an outgrowth of the black manosphere, the collective of YouTube content creators who discuss issues around American culture’s demonization of masculinity.
Passport Bros are primarily black men who leave America shopping for wives and girlfriends in Brazil, Colombia, Thailand, Costa Rica, the Philippines, and anywhere outside America.
They’re men who believe American women, particularly black women, have the wrong values, expectations, worldview, and attitude for a serious relationship.
Passport Bros chronicle their search for love and/or sex on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. They’re reviled and ridiculed on most social media platforms.
But the movement is growing because the untreated disconnect between American black men and women is growing wider and wider.
Black women see their role as leaders of the black community and the primary breadwinners. The Democrat Party, leftists, corporate media, and the LGBTQ movement have partnered with black women in imposing matriarchal culture.
