Border Patrol Calls In ‘Suicidologist’ To Address Rising Suicides Among Rank-And-File
Dr. Kent Corso, who began the role in early 2021 during high migrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border, was the first to do so for any government entity, according to the Examiner.
CBP authorities encountered over 2,000,000 migrants at the southern border between October 2021 and August 2022, surpassing records.
The spike has led to morale issues among CBP officials bearing the brunt of the surge.
“This administration continues to crumble what’s left of morale and is taking the U.S. Border Patrol to irreparable levels of destruction,” a Border Patrol agent stationed at the southern border previously told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Standing behind someone has now taken a different meaning. Trust in leadership has been cheapened.”

BUSTED — Texas troopers foiled a human smuggling scheme when they found 11 illegal immigrants packed into a truck during a traffic stop. According to officials, the smuggler has been charged and the 11 migrants were referred to U.S. border patrol.
Shannon Brandt charged with murder in death of Cayler Ellingson, who was allegedly ‘ran over’ by SUV
Foster County State’s Attorney Kara Brinster announced Friday that Brandt is being charged with murder in addition to duty in an accident involving death. Brinster said that the charge of criminal vehicular homicide has been dismissed because of the new murder charge.
Brandt turned himself in on Friday at the Stutsman County Correction Center. The new charges are the result of an investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Foster County Sheriff’s Department and the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
During the 911 call, Brandt “made comments regarding the incident being intentional and not an accident,” according to the affidavit.

Buckle up, America: The Fed plans to sharply boost unemployment
Fed Chair Jerome Powell made that amply clear last week when the central bank projected its benchmark rate hitting 4.4% by the end of the year — even if it causes a recession.
“There will very likely be some softening of labor market conditions,” Powell said in his September 21 economic outlook. “We will keep at it until we are confident the job is done.”
In plain English, that means unemployment. The Fed forecasts the unemployment rate to rise to 4.4% next year, from 3.7% today — a number that implies an additional 1.2 million people losing their jobs.
“I wish there were a painless way to do that,” Powell said. “There isn’t.”

Fed’s Brainard warns restrictive interest rates may be needed ‘for some time’
Federal Reserve Vice Chair Lael Brainard on Friday stressed the need to combat scorching-hot inflation with higher interest rates and pledged the central bank will not prematurely pull back on tighter monetary policy.
In a speech at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Brainard emphasized that officials will proceed both “deliberately and in a data-dependent manner” when forging monetary policy amid growing concerns about a global recession.
“Monetary policy will need to be restrictive for some time to have confidence that inflation is moving back to target,” she said. “For these reasons, we are committed to avoiding pulling back prematurely.”
The U.S. central bank has embarked on one of the fastest courses in history to raise borrowing costs and slow the economy.
JPMorgan plans to hire 2,000 tech workers by year’s end: report
Lori Beer, the megabank’s global chief engineering officer, told Reuters this week the firm is recruiting to fill a few thousand tech roles worldwide for positions in several areas, including data science and cybersecurity.
“We’re definitely still hiring,” Beer told the outlet in an interview, adding that the move signals JPMorgan is “a safe place through the uncertain economic times. … When you’re going into a tough economic time and things are very volatile, it does play into our favor.”
The bank’s ongoing efforts to build up its army of engineers comes as many tech giants, including Google and Facebook parent Meta, are freezing hiring or even trimming jobs as economies slow amid fears of a global recession.

House PASSES bill to avoid a shutdown until Dec 16
The continuing resolution made its way through the lower chamber 230-201 in a largely party-line vote. The Senate had passed the bill with a large bipartisan majority on Thursday and now it heads to President Biden’s desk.
The continuing resolution (CR) mostly funds the government at its current levels and kicks debate on longer-term bill down the road to after midterms, but it does include an additional $1 billion to help lower-income families with heating bills.
The House GOP had whipped against the bill, urging members to vote no due to further Ukraine funding and lack of funding for border security. Believing Democrats will lose one or both chambers, some Republicans, mostly from the Freedom Caucus, also have said they don’t want to give them a chance to pass a year-long funding bill during the ‘lame duck’ session between midterms and Congress’ next session.

Democrat attacks Pelosi for ‘failure of House leadership’ after STOCK Act fizzles, calls for ‘new leaders’
A House Democrat blasted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Friday for a “failure of House leadership” by refusing to call up legislation to impose tougher stock trading restrictions on members of Congress.
Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., said she has been working with members since 2020 to call up a bill that would strengthen the provisions of the STOCK Act, a 2012 law that prohibits lawmakers from using inside information to profit from stock trading. Support for a complete ban on trading by lawmakers grew this year, but Spanberger accused Pelosi, D-Calif., and other Democratic leaders of shutting it down.
“This moment marks a failure of House leadership — and it’s yet another example of why I believe that the Democratic Party needs new leaders in the halls of Capitol Hill,” she said.
She added that instead of finding consensus, Pelosi and other leaders “chose to ignore these voices, push them aside, and look for new ways they could string the media and the public along.”

Putin Signs Decree To Fast-Track Naturalization For Foreigners Joining Armed Forces
The decree that came into force immediately after it was signed on September 30 appeared on the website for Russian legislative documents.
Putin signed the decree on the same day he signed other decrees to formally seize four Ukrainian territories partially occupied by Moscow as he escalates his failing seven-month invasion.
According to the decree to simplify the naturalization process, foreigners who sign contracts on military service in the Russian armed forces for at least one year and then spend at least six months in military operations in armed conflict zones during which they are seriously wounded will be eligible to obtain Russian citizenship in a simplified and expedited way.
NATO Chief Says Putin’s Recent Actions Are ‘Serious Escalation’ Of War
Stoltenberg cited Russian President Vladimir Putin’s partial military mobilization, his “irresponsible nuclear saber-rattling,” and decrees signed on September 30 illegally annexing more Ukrainian territory.
Speaking at a news conference in Brussels, Stoltenberg condemned the Russian “land grab” of four Ukrainian provinces in decrees signed by Putin earlier at a Kremlin ceremony. He said the move was “illegal and illegitimate,” calling it the “largest attempted annexation of European territory by force since World War II.”
NATO allies “do not, and will not, recognize any of this territory as part of Russia,” he said.

The announcement came after meetings of Ukraine’s top military and security councils and after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees to formally seize four Ukrainian territories partially occupied by Moscow.
Commenting on Putin’s statements about occupied or partially occupied regions of Ukraine “joining Russia,” Zelenskiy said Russia is “trying to steal what does not belong to it.”
“We have a solution. First, only the path of strengthening Ukraine and expelling the occupiers from our entire territory will restore peace. We will go this way,” he said.
