NJ wants American flags memorializing 9/11 gone from highway overpasses

Two Central Jersey lawmakers said they plan to change that statute to keep the unofficial flags flying. Senator Declan O’Scanlon and Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso, both R-Monmouth, plan to introduce a bill to exempt display of American flags from the statute and asked Gov. Phil Murphy to intervene.

“We are deeply saddened to learn that the Turnpike Authority would choose to remove dozens of American flags under the guise of a regulation for advertising material, it is unpatriotic and completely unacceptable,” O’Scanlon said.

“We clearly have a massive group of private citizens, veterans and police officers dedicated to ensuring that those flags are safely and securely hung, and respectfully maintained.

This is an instance where government oversight obviously is not needed. We have requested legislation to undo this arbitrary, unnecessary, offensively unpatriotic action immediately.”

University’s Center for Social Justice and Inclusion Hosts Race-Segregated Virtual Events

This week, the center advertised an online discussion session for “students that do not identify as people of color”—white students, in other words.

A separate event—for students who are black, indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC)—is also on the calendar.

The non-POC event is billed as “a space for students that do not identify as persons of color to gather and to discuss their experience as students on campus and as non-POC in the world.”

Portland Police Arrest Dem Staffer During Riot

The police arrested Kristina Narayan, who is legislative director for the top Democrat in Oregon’s House of Representatives, along with 58 others during a riot that began Saturday night and continued into Sunday morning, according to a Portland Police Bureau report. Narayan has worked for House Speaker Tina Kotek since 2016.

On Saturday, officers blocked a crowd marching toward the East Portland Community Policing Center.

Police declared a riot after somebody in the crowd threw a firebomb toward officers, which set fire to a member of the community.

The rioters continued to throw rocks, fireworks, and mortars toward the officers.

Nearly 150 calls to Portland police were left on hold Saturday night as the riot forced local police officers to abandon their patrol and help control the violence.

Dallas Police Chief Resigns After City Council Criticized Her Handling of Protests

Dallas’s Black Police Association president Terrance Hopkins said criticism brought against Hall was unwarranted and cited positive changes Hall fostered during her tenure.

“We increased hiring. We increased pay during tenure,” Hopkins said. “So there’s a lot of good things that Chief Hall did for the City of Dallas.”

Jesurobo Enobakhare, chairman of the police oversight board, described Hall’s leadership as “historic.”

“Everything that this chief has done pretty much has been historic in the city of Dallas: supporting the oversight board, making it easier for residents to submit complaints,” Enobakhare said.

Before pandemic, feds funded human coronavirus experiments in 2019 in China

The State Department, meanwhile, noted in 2018 that NIH has been a “major funder” of coronavirus research at that laboratory, one which —according to a recently released State memo — possessed a “shortage of trained staff.”

EcoHealth Alliance, a New York-based organization dedicated to infectious disease research, received $3.4 million over 6 years from NIH, according to an NIH spokeswoman.

Among the sub-awardees of that grant was the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the infectious disease institute that sits within a few miles of where the Chinese government claimed the COVID-19 outbreak began.

ER charges nearly $11,000 for COVID-10 test

Physicians Premier ER charged Dr. Zachary Sussman’s insurance $10,984 for his COVID-19 antibody test even though Sussman worked for the chain and knows the testing materials only cost about $8.

When Dr. Zachary Sussman went to Physicians Premier ER in Austin for a COVID-19 antibody test, he assumed he would get a freebie because he was a doctor for the chain.

Instead, the free-standing emergency room charged his insurance company an astonishing $10,984 for the visit — and got paid every penny, with no pushback.

The bill left him so dismayed he quit his job.

And now, after ProPublica’s questions, the parent company of his insurer said the case is being investigated and could lead to repayment or a referral to law enforcement.

Five Border Detention Facilities Get Clean Bills of Health

“We observed clean facilities and verified that temperatures and ventilation in the holding rooms were appropriate,” stated a newly released report by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General (OIG).

The only deficiency cited was a lack of on-site showers at four of the facilities. But, the report added, “no detainees were approaching the detention time threshold when a shower would be required.”

The findings were a welcome turnaround from OIG’s 2019 inspection that identified “dangerous overcrowding” and a host of other problems at border facilities. (Contrary to bogus media reports, there were no kids in cages, however. That story was sooo 2014.)

‘Senseless’: 51 Shot, 10 Dead in Bloody Chicago Labor Day Weekend, Child Among the Dead

A total of 51 people were hit by gunfire and 10 people died, Chicago police told ABC 7. An 8-year-old girl was shot fatally Monday in an SUV while waiting at a stoplight, authorities told the local outlet.

“Our victims’ vehicle was parked facing northbound on Union Avenue with the offender’s vehicle directly behind it,” McDermott continued. “When the light turned green, the offender’s vehicle immediately opened fire on the victims’ vehicle.”

The 8-year-old, who has yet to be named, and two other adults in the car sustained gunshot wounds, according to ABC 7. The vehicle plowed into a tree after being riddled by bullets, the local outlet reported.

It started off as a scenario we’ve seen played out far too many times in recent months.

A suspect being taken into custody suddenly turns on law enforcement, resists arrest, and begins beating on the police officer.

Then, bystanders get involved in the conflict. But this time, the result was not the same as we’ve seen recently.

This time, it was the police officer the bystanders came to assist.

17-year-old charged with murder in killing of Lafayette pizza delivery driver

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Jaelynn Billups, 17, is facing multiple felony charges including murder, armed robbery and theft in the killing of a Lafayette pizza delivery driver.

Joshua Ungersma, 37, was shot and killed while making a pizza delivery Aug. 31 in the 1900 block of N. 16th Street in Lafayette.

A witness, Patrick Gibson, told 13News and police that he had heard gunshots and went outside. He said he saw Billups with 19-year-old Alberto Vanmeter, and Vanmeter had been shot.

Ungersma told Gibson that Billups and Vanmeter had tried to rob him and to call police. Gibson said he then saw Billups walk up and shoot Ungersma.

Josh Hawley submitting Senate bill allowing DOJ to raise police salaries

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., is planning to submit a bill to Congress on Wednesday authorizing the Justice Department to raise the salaries of state and local police forces all across the country — except in cities that have chosen to defund law enforcement in the wake of nationwide protests and riots.

The David Dorn Back the Blue Act was named for David Dorn, a retired police captain shot and killed, allegedly by an armed looter, during the George Floyd protests in June.

Dorn, who was Black, had served his community for almost 40 years and reportedly died protecting a friend’s store from violent rioters in St. Louis.

The bill would seek to increase officer hiring and retention by authorizing $15 billion for Attorney General Bill Barr to disperse to police departments in financial need.

The president told the crowd that he has “decided to call our rallies peaceful protests,” The Guardian reported Tuesday. In addition to calling the rallies “peaceful protests,” the campaign handed out signs with the phrase.

Trump elaborated on his use of the phrase Tuesday and said that it is, in part, because of maximum capacity mandates in North Carolina. Protests have been largely exempt from maximum capacity rules set by each state due to COVID-19.

Liu Xiaoming’s account also liked posts that criticised the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and showed blindfolded Uighurs being detained.Officials claimed that “anti-Chinese elements [had] viciously attacked” Mr Liu’s account in a “despicable” plot designed to “deceive the public”.Twitter has yet to comment.

The activity first drew attention after the account liked a 10-second video posted by an adult-themed page containing clips with Chinese-language descriptions.

Uighurs Accuse China of Genocide in International Court

The two organizations—the East Turkistan Government in Exile and the East Turkistan National Awakening Movement—have retained human-rights lawyers based in London and the Hague to make the case for Chinese prosecution in the International Criminal Court.

The complaint marks the first time Uighurs have used an international court to combat China’s abuses against the ethnic group. 

Compiling more than 20 accounts from survivors of Uighur labor camps, the legal team hopes to take aim at approximately 30 senior Chinese Communist Party leaders, including Chinese president Xi Jinping. 

The Uighur population in Xinjiang—a province in western China—totals roughly 11.7 million, according to Chinese government figures.

Official With Anti-Israel U.N. Group to Help Train BDS Activists in D.C.

The UNRWA official’s participation in the event is generating concerns about the U.N. agency, which saw its funding cut by the Trump administration as a result of anti-Israel controversies. 

Her attendance is evidence the group has made no effort to reform. In stark contrast to the Trump administration’s policy, Biden in May vowed to restore more than $350 million to the group if elected.

Facebook to be forced to stop sending EU data to the US

In a statement, Nick Clegg, Facebook’s head lobbyist, confirmed Ireland’s expected decision, saying that the pending ruling would be felt across the transatlantic economy.

“A lack of safe, secure and legal international data transfers would damage the economy and hamper the growth of data-driven businesses in the EU,” Clegg said.

“We will continue to transfer data in compliance with the recent CJEU ruling and until we receive further guidance.”

Facebook still has an opportunity to put its case to Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner before a final judgment — but the order will likely set a precedent for how billions of euros of data should be handled and moved across the Atlantic.

The order may force other tech giants like Google to reconsider transferring EU data to the U.S. after the 27-country bloc’s highest court ruled in July that the U.S. did not sufficiently protect Europeans’ privacy rights when their data was accessed by American national security agencies.

United States Formally Announces Troop Reduction in Iraq

The United States has around 5,200 troops that were deployed in Iraq to fight the Islamic State militant group. Officials in the U.S.-led coalition say Iraqi forces are now mostly able to handle the remnants of Islamic State on their own.

“We are continuing to expand on our partner capacity programs that enable Iraqi forces and allow us to reduce our footprint in Iraq,” Marine General Frank McKenzie, the head of U.S. Central Command, said during a visit to Iraq.

A senior administration official had said on Tuesday that President Donald Trump would be announcing a reduction of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Afghan officials: Kabul bomb targets VP, kills 10 civilians

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing and the Taliban quickly denied they were behind the attack.

First Vice President Amrullah Saleh suffered minor burns in the blast. The bomb was hidden in a cart by the roadside and detonated as his convoy passed by.

Saleh, who is also Afghanistan’s former intelligence chief, said in his first television appearance immediately after the attack that he was fine and had sustained only slight burns. He appeared in the TV footage with bandages on one hand.

Australian Journalists Flee China after Diplomatic Stand Off

Chinese officials told Bill Birtles, Beijing correspondent for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Mike Smith, Shanghai correspondent for the Australian Financial Review (AFR) that they were “persons of interest in an investigation” into an Australian anchor for state broadcaster CGTN, Cheng Lei, AFR said.

Cheng has been detained by police in China as she is “suspected of engaging in criminal activities endangering China’s national security,” said Zhao Lijian, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson.

The last president to avoid doing so was Peace Prize laureate Jimmy Carter,” he wrote.
