California woman, 28, faces up to 20 years in jail after she admitted punching Southwest flight attendant who asked her to wear her mask properly

Quinonez was on a May 23 Southwest Airlines flight from Sacramento to San Diego when a flight attendant, identified only as S.L, asked her to buckle her seatbelt, stow her tray table and wear her mask properly during the descent – all violations of federal rules and regulations.

The high-profile attack was among 5,779 incidents involving unruly passengers – with 4,156 of those for passengers refusing to wear masks – reported to the Federal Aviation Administration this year.

More than $1 million in fines have been doled out to unruly passenger behavior in 2021 alone.

Quinonez’s admitted in her plea agreement that she was not wearing her face mask properly at the time of the incident.

Ex-Minnesota police officer found guilty of manslaughter in shooting of Daunte Wright

A 12-member jury found Potter, 49, guilty of first degree and second degree manslaughter in the death of the 20-year-old Wright, who she killed in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center on April 11 with a bullet to the chest.

Potter, who broke down last week on the stand as she testified to her remorse for the shooting, showed little emotion as Judge Regina Chu read the verdict and polled the jury. Potter was taken away in handcuffs after Chu rejected her attorney’s plea for her to be allowed to spend Christmas with family.

“I am going to require that she be taken into custody and held without bail,” Chu said. “I cannot treat this case any differently than any other case.”

Caught on Potter’s body-worn camera, the basic facts of the incident were for the most part not in dispute. Both prosecutors and the defense attorneys agreed that Potter mistakenly drew the wrong weapon and never meant to kill Wright.

At issue was whether the jury would find her actions to be reckless in violation of the state’s manslaughter statutes, or chalk up the incident to a tragic mistake that did not warrant criminal liability.

The editors of the BMJ—one of the oldest and most respected scientific journals in the world—have issued a blistering letter slamming Facebook for one of its “fact-checking” partners the editors are calling “inaccurate, incompetent and irresponsible.”

At issue is the BMJ’s publishing of a report on “internal company documents, photos, audio recordings, and emails” it received from an employee who had worked for a subcontractor of Pfizer during the company’s COVID-19 vaccine trials.

The materials “revealed a host of poor clinical trial research practices occurring at Ventavia that could impact data integrity and patient safety,” the editors claim.

After the magazine published the report on the findings, however, readers of the BMJ “began reporting a variety of problems when trying to share [the] article” on Facebook.

Biden prepared to add troops near Ukraine; threatens Russia with ‘severe costs’

The U.S. is prepared to add troops near Ukraine and “impose severe costs” on Russia if it doesn’t stop its aggressive military buildup near Ukraine’s border, a senior administration official said on Thursday.

“We have said we will increase support for Ukraine’s ability to defend its own territory and also to reassure our NATO partners and allies by changes in our force posture in frontline states.

All that planning is well underway on our side, and we are ready to act if and when we need to,” the senior administration official said during a press call attended by American Military News.

The administration has planned out responses to a Russian invasion and is prepared to carry out those plans at a moment’s notice.

Uganda Charges 15 With Terrorism for Role in IS-Linked Bombings

Uganda on Thursday charged 15 people with offences including terrorism and aiding terrorism related to their alleged role in bombings in the country’s capital and elsewhere in October and November that left at least nine people dead.

In the early hours of Nov. 16 a suicide bomber blew himself up at the entrance of a police station in the centre of Kampala. Three minutes later two other suicide bombers detonated along a road that leads to the parliament.

Originally a Ugandan group, the ADF has operated in the dense forests in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo across the border with Uganda for more than three decades. The group began killing civilians in large numbers in 2014.

The attacks in October and November prompted the Ugandan military to deploy in eastern Congo in late November to take on the Islamist fighters.

Russian mercenaries deploy to eastern Ukraine – sources

In recent weeks, Russia has moved tens of thousands of regular troops to staging posts closer to Ukraine and followed up by demanding urgent security guarantees from the West designed, Moscow says, to prevent Ukraine and other neighbouring countries being used as a base to attack it.

The West and Ukraine have for their part accused Russia of weighing a fresh attack on its southern neighbour as soon as next month, something Moscow denies.

Of four sources, three described their offers from mercenary recruiters to go to Donbass. They said the recruiters did not disclose who they represented. All four sources declined to be named, citing fears for their safety.

Two of the three sources said they had accepted; the third said he had refused.

Major Chinese real estate developer Evergrande totters on the brink; investors fear collapse, which could trigger another major financial liquidity crisis

China-based Evergrande is one of the world’s largest real estate development companies, and it has been publicly facing financial woes for several months.

It is believed to be the world’s most indebted developer, with over $300 billion in estimated liabilities, according to Reuters. Alarm bells began blaring in late September when Evergrande missed several major international bond payments, leading several agencies to downgrade Evergrande’s credit rating, which has exacerbated their inability to restructure their debt. Evergrande was formally declared in default earlier in December.

Evergrande’s inability to repay its debts has already begun to strain the liquidity of some financial institutions, and may have already had significant spillover effects.

Fellow Chinese real estate developer Kaisa made news last month when it failed to repay a $400 million bond and announced that it was exploring restructuring options. The Financial Times notes that other major Chinese real estate developers, including Fantasia and China Modern Land have also missed repayment deadlines recently.
