Texas nurse charged with 6 counts of murder in fiery LA crash was involved in 13 prior wrecks: prosecutors
Nicole Linton, 37, of Houston, was charged on Monday with six counts of murder and five counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.
The announcement came after she allegedly barreled a Mercedes down La Brea Avenue on Aug. 4 at high speeds before running a red light and crashing into several vehicles in the Windsor Hills neighborhood, igniting a fiery wreck seen on surveillance cameras.
Prosecutors alleged that Linton had been involved in 13 car crashes — both in and out of the state of California — before Thursday’s wreck, the Los Angeles Times reported.
They noted one in 2020 involved bodily injury and two cars being totaled but did not elaborate with more information.
Those killed included 23-year-old Asherey Ryan, who was eight-and-a-half months pregnant, her 11-month-old son and Ryan’s boyfriend. Two other women, who have yet to be identified, in another vehicle also were killed. Six other vehicles were involved in the collision, including five people with minor injuries in an SUV and another driver in another vehicle, according to prosecutors. The case remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
Jury picked in 2nd trial in Gov. Whitmer kidnap plot
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — After questions about guns, politics and COVID-19, a jury was selected Tuesday for the second trial of two men charged with conspiring to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer over their disgust with restrictions early in the pandemic.
The judge and lawyers settled on 18 people, including six alternates, to hear the case against Adam Fox and Barry Croft Jr.
They’re on trial again after a jury in April couldn’t reach a verdict. Two co-defendants were acquitted and two more pleaded guilty earlier.
U.S. District Judge Robert Jonker repeatedly told prospective jurors that some familiarity with the case wouldn’t mean exclusion.
Pro-Antifa teacher who admitted to trying to radicalize students given HEFTY payday to resign
In 2021, Project Veritas exposed California teacher Gabriel Gipe for attempting to radicalize his students. In January 2022, school officials paid him three years’ worth of his salary for his resignation.
Gipe, who made $60,000 annually, was given $190,000 – which after taxes amount to around $100,000 – to walk away from his teaching gig after admitting that he had “180 days to turn them [his students] into revolutionaries.”
This, coupled with other statements created a fierce backlash that Natomas Unified School District couldn’t ignore. Superintendent Chris Evans explained that Gipe, who was a social studies teacher at the time, was going to be removed from the school.
The way he discussed manipulating young minds into being accepting of his radical personal beliefs could be described as “Orwellian.”
“You need propaganda of the deed — your economics — and cultural propaganda as well. You need to retrain the way people think. … Consistently focusing on education and a change of cultural propaganda. We have to hit both fronts. We have to convince people that this is what we actually need,” he bragged.
Sheriff: Man’s plan to ambush officers thwarted by training
The deputies came to the home after the man called 911 twice to say a woman was being beaten by a man. While several officers responded since it was a potentially life-threatening call, only one deputy approached the home, ruining the shooter’s plans, the sheriff said.
“His intent was to kill as many Richland County deputies as he could,” Lott said.
Lott showed a hand-drawn map the shooter made of the floorplan of his parents’ home. It indicated at least four points where he could fire on deputies with outside trees and other obstructions drawn as well.
At the bottom of the map was written “dead pigs” and a smiley face.
Albuquerque police detain suspect in killing of 4 Muslim men
Police announced Tuesday that they have detained a “primary suspect” in the killings of four Muslim men in Albuquerque, New Mexico, whose deaths sparked fear in Muslim communities nationwide.
Police Chief Harold Medina made the announcement on Twitter, saying that authorities had tracked down a vehicle believed to be involved in one of the slayings in New Mexico’s largest city.
“The driver was detained, and he is our primary suspect for the murders,” the tweet said.
Fewer than 1 in 3 insured hepatitis C patients getting cure
NEW YORK (AP) — Fewer than 1 in 3 people infected with hepatitis C are getting the expensive treatments that can cure them, according to a U.S. government study released Tuesday.
The report is distressing because it focused on those with health insurance — the group most likely to get treated for the liver infection, said one expert, Dr. Norah Terrault.
Insurance restrictions appear to be part of the reason for the surprisingly low percentage. A course of treatment can cost tens of thousands of dollars but can wipe out the infection in only a few months. It may also be that not enough primary care doctors are prescribing the medicines, perhaps thinking it should be handled by a specialist or dissuaded by the paperwork that may be required, experts said.

George Washington University Law School professor and constitutional scholar Jonathan Turley questioned why Attorney General Merrick Garland would not have proceeded with a special counsel before green-lighting the raid.
According to Turley, the potential appearance of politicization would have warranted an impartial investigation, which could have been done with a special counsel.
“Well, it’s a breathtaking moment to have a raid like this on a former president and potentially the future opponent of the current president,” he said. “My first reaction beyond shock is that it is baffling how this raid would occur, but Merrick Garland decided not to appoint a special counsel. If there was evidence that supports a warrant, and apparently a federal judge found that evidence, why didn’t Merrick Garland ask for a special counsel to be appointed? You know, people like Archibald Cox and others are celebrated because we appointed a special counsel to look into Nixon. Why? It was because we wanted to assure the American people that an investigation would not be political, would not be influenced in that case by Nixon himself.”
Dershowitz: Trump Raid ‘Improper’ — ‘This Is Misconduct’
Monday, on the heels of news that former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach, FL was raided by the FBI, Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz criticized the raid as “misconduct.”
According to Dershowitz, a raid is the method of last resort, and the onus will be on the Biden administration to show justification, or anything obtained in the raid would be suppressed.
“The raid is supposed to be a last resort,” he said. “But this administration has used the weaponization of the justice system against its political enemies. It has arrested people, denied them bail, put them in handcuffs – used all kinds of techniques that are not usually applied to American citizens. I just hope this raid has the justification. If it doesn’t have the justification, the materials seized in it will be suppressed.”

“We just haven’t investigated presidents after they’ve served their term,” Tabman said. “But it is a huge move by the FBI in that the political sensitivities are clear.”

California’s death row houses 687 inmates, twice as many as Florida and three times the number in Texas. Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon is committed to reducing that number, seeking to resentence at least 15 death row inmates to life without parole.
“The reality is a death penalty doesn’t make us safer. It is racist. It’s morally untenable, its irreversible and expensive,” Gascon claims. “And it’s not just off the table going forward. I am committed to resentencing those currently on death row to life in prison.”
“His office is telling families, don’t worry, nothing really changes. If that is the case, why do it?” asks Cady. “The sentence that the judge imposed essentially is going to be meaningless if these people are then entitled to get a parole hearing based on the elder or youthful parole law.
Chicago police release video of CTA Red Line murder suspects
Chicago police released video Monday of two suspects wanted for a murder on a CTA Red Line train.
After a brief conversation with the 29-year-old victim, police say one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and shot him in the chest and abdomen.
The victim was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Victims identified after deadly hostage situation at Narcotics Anonymous meeting in Edgewater
Police have identified three people who were killed, including the suspect, during an apparent murder-suicide at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting in Edgewater on Monday evening.
Erica Hoffman, 33, and Ian Greenfield, 59, were killed during the stand-off at the ‘Bridge the Gap’ meeting on North Ridgewood Avenue. The shooter has been identified as 49-year-old Quinton Francis Hunter “Rags.”
On Tuesday, police held a news conference to discuss new details discovered during the investigation.
Just after 7 p.m. on Monday, Edgewater police officers responded to 515 N. Ridgewood Ave. where witnesses said a man had entered the facility and shot one man before taking a woman hostage.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell Tuesday dodged a question about the FBI’s Monday search of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home during a Kentucky press conference.
“I’m here to talk about the flood and recovery from the flood,” McConnell, R-Ky., said when asked about the raid.
McConnell was in his home state after floods recently hit the eastern part of his state, killing dozens. President Biden and Jill Biden even visited the state Monday in the wake of the natural disaster.
The minority leader’s refusal to talk about the search warrant served on Trump’s private home comes as Senate GOP leadership has been slower than their House counterparts to comment on the raid.

Pakistan arrests close aide to ex-PM Khan on treason charge
The arrest of Shahbaz Gill, chief of staff at Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf opposition party, was quickly condemned by party officials, including Khan, who took to Twitter to denounce Gill’s arrest.
“This is an abduction, not an arrest. Can such shameful acts take place in any democracy? Political workers (are) treated as enemies. And all to make us accept (a) foreign-backed government of crooks,” he tweeted..
The charges against Gill carry up to a death sentence if he is found guilty.
Gill’s arrest came a day after he appeared on the country’s ARY news channel and spoke at length about the current political situation. In it he urged troops up to the brigadier level not to accept any illegal order from the top military leadership.
Explosions rock Russian airfield in Crimea after apparent Ukrainian strike

Local residents reported hearing 12 explosions coming from the base. Russian officials said the explosions were caused by the detonation of several ammunition stores.
The base is home to a Russian naval strike aircraft, as well as a training ground for Russian pilots.
Ukrainian social media was abuzz with speculation that the Ukrainian military had struck the base, but Ukrainian officials did not confirm any attack.
If the explosions were indeed the result of a Ukrainian strike, it would mark the first major strike against Russian forces in Crimea — which has served as a base for the Russian Black Sea fleet even before the 2014 annexation — and a significant escalation in the fighting.

Hezbollah threatens to ‘sever’ the hand of Israel if it attempts to tap disputed offshore gas
“The hand that reaches for any of this wealth will be severed,” Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah in Lebanon, said during televised remarks in Beirut Tuesday, according to Radio France Internationale (RFI).
The warning comes as the U.S. has intensified efforts to resolve the maritime border dispute between Israel and Lebanon, two countries that have been in an official state of war for over 70 years. Both countries claim an over-300-square-mile stretch of the Mediterranean Sea subject to ongoing negotiations. Lebanon argues that the Karish gas field Israel claims is part of its internationally recognized waters.
Negotiations over the disputed region, which resumed in 2020 after stalling out during the 2006 war between the two countries, have picked up as Lebanon seeks to claw out of one of the worst economic crisis in its history. The country sees access to the offshore gas reserves as key to its recovery, with Nasrallah’s comments coming as Lebanon awaits a response from Israel to an offer to resolve the dispute that was submitted to U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein last month.
