Pfizer reports record quarterly sales propelled by COVID-19 vaccine, Paxlovid
July 28 (UPI) — Pfizer reported Thursday record-high sales of $27.7 billion for the second quarter, up 47% from the same period last year on the strength of its COVID-19 vaccine and antiviral drug Paxlovid.
The pharmaceutical company reported net income of $9.9 billion, a 78% increase from the second quarter of 2021.
“In multiple meaningful ways, we made significant progress this quarter on our strategies to bring value to our patients and shareholders, while also making commitments to prioritize the broader needs of the world, including those of the environment and our most vulnerable populations,” Pfizer CEO Dr. Alberta Bourla said in a statement.
Bourla said Pfizer set an ambitious goal to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and launched an initiative to help bring all of its current and future patented medicines and vaccines to the 1.2 billion people living in 45 lower-income countries “at not-for-profit prices.”
Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine generated $8.8 billion in revenue. Paxlovid brought in $8.1 billion.
The company is expecting $98 billion to $102 billion in revenue for 2022.
‘Catastrophic’ flash floods leave hundreds stranded, 3 dead in Ky.
Heavy rain poured down across southeastern Kentucky into Thursday morning, prompting a flash flood emergency and stranding hundreds.
The disastrous flooding occurred just two days after a historic deluge inundated the St. Louis area.
In a Thursday afternoon press conference, Gov. Andy Beshear confirmed an 81-year-old woman had died in Perry County. He confirmed an additional death in Perry County and another in neighboring Knott County, which brought the death toll to three. Beshear said he expects the death toll to reach double digits.
Beshear described this as “one of the worst and most devastating events in Kentucky’s history.”
Fire near Yosemite grows to over 19,000 acres, nearly 40% contained
July 28 (UPI) — California’s Oak Fire near Yosemite National Park has destroyed more than 100 homes and other structures and crews have the blaze about 40% contained, officials said Thursday.
The fire started last Friday and has since blackened about 19,200 acres, Cal Fire said in an update on Thursday. It’s burning on the west side of Yosemite National Park in Mariposa County about 115 miles southeast of Sacramento.
Fire crews have been up against hot temperatures and some winds, and dry vegetation in the area has helped to fuel the flames.
The number of burned structures have soared over the past two days, from 41 on Tuesday to at least 116 on Thursday.
The National Interagency Fire Center has estimated the cost of fighting the Oak Fire to be about $15.3 million so far. On Thursday, there were close to 4,000 emergency personnel working on the blaze.

According to reports, an additional 1,100 Michigan families eventually declared bankruptcy after hiring attorneys and paying other court fees to fight the false charges. Others had difficulty finding employment or securing a home loan. There were also likely untold social costs.
The faulty computer program operated while Governor Rick Snyder, a Republican and the predecessor to current Governor Gretchen Whitmer, was still in office, though the exact years are unclear. According to Lord, this computer program cost state taxpayers $46 million to purchase and yet “was wrong 93 percent of the time.”
The Unemployment Benefit Office has since admitted the error, but Lord said that her goal is to have the state admit the error on the record. Because of the Michigan Supreme Court ruling, the case will now go to the trial level. Class-action lawsuits are expected to be filed against the state soon.

Colorado this month started investigating allegations made in 2019 against a powerful Democrat-appointed official after the Denver Post started digging into the allegations, the Post reported Monday.
This is far from the only allegation against Willis. In the last 18 months alone, the state has twice suspended Willis for “berating female staffers, throwing objects in rage, and intimidating workers to the point they thought it was close to getting physical,” the Post reported. Multiple witnesses told the paper that Willis has repeatedly “been drunk after-hours at industry conferences and nearly fought other attendees.”
Willis “rules by fear,” said the state employee who alleged Willis was drunk on the day of the shooting. “He intimidates. He threatens.”

Bowser said the deployment and other support from the federal government are needed to address the “growing humanitarian crisis” of an increasing number of asylum-seekers traveling through the country to their final destinations.
“We need the space and we need the federal government to be involved, so I’ve asked for the deployment of the guard as long as we need the guard to deal with the humanitarian crisis that we expect to escalate.
The number of people crossing the border seeking asylum we expect to only go up and we need to make sure that there is a national response, not an ad hoc city by city, state by state response,” Bowser said.
Ducey also responded to Bowser’s announcement with a series of tweets Thursday, saying “Bowser is right” that the issue is a humanitarian crisis.
“If the Mayor really wants to address the issue, she can join us in calling for President Biden to take action at the root of the problem, and secure our southern border,” Ducey added.

A New York City public school encouraged students as young as 10 years old to keep a list of all the “microaggressions” they witnessed, both at school and in their own families, according to materials from the school’s curriculum reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon.
The same students were also asked to list their gender identity—”cisgender,” “nonbinary,” or “trans”—as well as their sexual orientation on a graded worksheet.
The sixth-grade humanities curriculum from Lower Manhattan Community Middle School, where just 31 percent of students are white, required students to read Tiffany Jewell’s This Book Is Anti-Racist, one of only five books assigned for the 2021-2022 year. The book contains 20 lessons on “how to wake up, take action, and do the work”—including the work of confronting the police, which Jewell suggests white students can do without ending up “in jail or harmed.”
“If you are a Black, Brown, or Indigenous Person of the Global Majority, you will need to decide how each outcome could end for you,” Jewell writes in a chapter called “Choosing My Path.” “White people, this is not something you need to do because you are at the center of the system.”

This site offers an eight-week remote learning course on social justice and LGBTQ+ topics for pre-k through third grade. The site also links to an “educational resource” page with a link to “Woke Kindergarten.”
By flagging this video, the Libs of TikTok Twitter page exposed a hotbed of content that “probably won’t interest the public,” and conservatives should “definitiely not criticize on social media.” Especially considering how fiercely the movement is protected by the Biden administration.

Suspect denied bail in rape of 10-year-old Ohio girl in abortion controversy
July 28 (UPI) — The 27-year-old Ohio man accused of raping a 10-year-old girl, whose abortion in Indiana became a national flashpoint over the procedure, was ordered held without bail on Thursday morning until trial.
Gerson Fuentes, who faced two counts of rape of a child under 13, had originally been held on a $2 million bail.Fuentes’ attorney Bryan Bowen said even if he would have made bond, because he is an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, Immigration and Customs Enforcement may have placed a hold on him.
Would-Be Kavanaugh Assassin Was ‘Shooting for Three’ Justices, Sources Confirm
Nicholas Roske, the California man who attempted to kill Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, was literally gunning for a SCOTUS trifecta. He wanted to kill three justices. His plan was to “change the votes for decades to come,” according to court documents.
Roske also performed web searches on his phone for “most effective place to stab someone,” “Reagan assassination attempt,” “quietest semi auto rifle,” “supreme court,” and “assassin skills.”
Roske is looking at life behind bars if found guilty.

A U.S. defense contractor and his wife who lived for decades under the identities of two dead Texas children have been charged with identity theft and conspiring against the government, according to federal court records unsealed in Honolulu.
Walter Glenn Primrose and Gwynn Darle Morrison, both in their 60s, who allegedly lived for decades under the names Bobby Edward Fort and Julie Lyn Montague, respectively, were arrested Friday in Kapolei on the island of Oahu.
Prosecutors are seeking to have the couple held without bail, which could indicate the case is about more than fraudulently obtaining drivers’ licenses, passports and Defense Department credentials. According to a criminal complaint obtained by Hawaii News Now, Primrose was allegedly issued a total of five U.S. passports under the identity of Bobby Fort. Morrison was issued a total of three U.S. passports under the name of Julie Montague, the complaint says.

Democrat Reconciliation Bill Relies on Extra Taxes, IRS Enforcement to Spend over $400B on Obamacare, ‘Climate Change’
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) on Wednesday unveiled the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which would attempt to “address record inflation by paying down our national debt, lowering energy costs and lowering healthcare costs.”

Manchin’s Spending Bill Shafts Coal Miners With Massive Tax Hike
Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, the nation’s second-largest producer of coal, is backing a spending bill that will more than double certain taxes on coal mining.
Section 13901 of the bill, dubbed by Democrats as “The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022,” increases the tax per ton of coal coming from underground mines from $0.50 to $1.10 and also hikes the tax on surface mines from $0.25 to $0.55. The new bill accomplishes this by changing the tax code and striking down a subsection that reduces the tax on coal production.
“The bill has provisions that discourage coal use as well as many others that provide an unfair advantage to alternative energy sources,” Ben Lieberman, a senior fellow at The Competitive Enterprise Institute, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “There’s virtually nothing in this bill likely to bring energy costs down, and quite a few measures likely to push them up.”

Biden tells Xi U.S. strongly opposes changing Taiwan status quo
July 28 (UPI) — During his talk with Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Joe Biden “underscored that the United States policy has not changed” on Taiwan, the White House said Thursday.
According to a White House readout of the call, Biden told Xi that “the United States United States strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the status quo or undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”
The two leaders had a lot to discuss as tensions are high over Taiwan, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Chinese actions the United States sees as aggressive in the Pacific.
It was the two leaders’ fifth talk since February 2021. The White House readout statement said the two presidents discussed “a range of issues important to the bilateral relationship and other regional and global issues.”
