Police chase: Motorcyclist who led authorities on 2-county pursuit taken into custody
LOS ANGELES – A motorcyclist wanted for speeding who led authorities on a pursuit in Los Angeles and Orange counties was taken into custody in the Echo Park area in dramatic fashion.
The California Highway Patrol began pursuing the suspect riding a motorcycle in Los Alamitos just before 10 a.m. Monday. The pursuit continued as the suspect led officers southbound into Orange County and back into Los Angeles County from Carson to South Los Angeles on the northbound lanes of the 110 Freeway.
At one point, SkyFOX recorded the suspect reaching speeds up to 90 mph.
Trump-Hating, Oscar Winning Writer/Director, Paul Haggis Is Arrested For Rape In Italy
Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis (Crash) was detained on Sunday in the southern Italian town of Ostuni on charges of sexual assault and aggravated personal injury, according to multiple reports in the Italian media and a statement by the public prosecutors of the nearby city of Brindisi.
A young woman, identified only as being “foreign,” that is not Italian, has pressed charges against Haggis, accusing the two-time Oscar winner of forcing her to engage in sexual intercourse over the course of two days in Ostuni, where Haggis was scheduled to hold a series of master classes at the Allora Fest,
The woman was taken to the Papola Casale airport in Brindisi on Sunday morning and left there despite her “precarious physical and psychological conditions,” according to an Italian police report. She was then aided by airport staff and police officers and taken to the hospital. She subsequently filed formal charges.
Monthly car payments hit record high as vehicle costs soar
Average monthly car payments hit a record high in May as the cost of new vehicles soared, thanks in part to higher interest rates and a dwindling supply chain.
The average monthly car payment last month hit $712, roughly a 1.7% increase compared to the month before, according to data from Moody’s Analytics.
Additionally, the average price of a new vehicle rose to $47,418 during the same month, vastly outpacing income growth.
As a result, it would cost the average consumer 41.3 weeks’ worth of a median income to buy a new vehicle in the month of May — a 19% increase from the same time period last year.

Supreme Court poised to hear case on election rules
The Associated Press reports that four of the high court’s conservative-leaning justices have expressed interest in deciding whether state courts should have the power to change federal election laws.
In March, Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote that the issue will “keep arising until the Court definitely resolves it.”
Four of the nine high court justices must agree to hear a case. Along with Kavanaugh, Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch have also expressed interest in the case.
The court may decide as soon as this week whether it will hear an appeal filed by North Carolina Republicans that challenges a state court ruling that threw out the congressional district maps drawn by that state’s General Assembly.

Grenell Headed to Iowa Amid Trump VP Speculation
Former Acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell is scheduled to speak in Iowa this week amid early speculation that he is among 2024 vice presidential possibilities for former President Donald Trump.

Voters appear to overwhelmingly support a Republican congresswoman’s demand for roll call votes in the House of Representatives. They also say members of Congress should read the bills they pass into law.
That’s according to Rasmussen Reports.
The poll finds that 89% of likely US voters say the votes for passing bills in Congress should be recorded on roll calls, which means every member would be on the record as voting “yes” or “no.” Currently votes are often taken verbally with no individual roll call.
Only six percent (6%) say it’s okay for bills to be passed on unrecorded voice votes.

Intl Space Station Swerves to Avoid Debris From Russian Missile Test
The International Space Station last week was forced to dodge debris from a past Russian anti-satellite missile test, Space.com reports.
Last Thursday, Roscosmos, Russia’s space agency, utilized a cargo ship that was docked at the ISS to push the station away from a piece of space debris that came from the destruction of a defunct Soviet-era satellite in a missile test last November.
“This afternoon, the International Space Station’s Progress 81 thrusters fired for 4 minutes, 34 seconds in a Pre-Determined Debris Avoidance Maneuver (PDAM) to provide the complex an extra measure of distance away from the predicted track of a fragment of Russian Cosmos 1408 debris,” NASA wrote in an update on the station.

It underscores how divisive the issue remains in Japan, the only member of the Group of Seven major industrialized nations that does not recognize same-sex unions.
The plaintiffs — two male couples and one female couple — were among 14 same-sex couples who filed lawsuits against the government in five major cities — Sapporo, Tokyo, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Osaka — in 2019 for violating rights to free union and equality.
