Afghan Brought to U.S. by Biden Accused of Raping Teenage Girl in Montana
Zabihullah Mohmand, a 19-year-old Afghan male, was arrested and charged with raping an 18-year-old woman in a Residence Inn Marriot hotel in Missoula on October 17. According to the woman, she met Mohmand at the hotel bar.
Montana Talks reports that Mohmand arrived in the U.S. on “humanitarian parole,” the process by which the Biden administration has brought tens of thousands of Afghans to the U.S. over the last two months.
Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) told Montana Talks that “this situation and others across the country raise serious concerns about whether the Biden administration is meeting its obligations to fully vet Afghans prior to resettlement.”
The charges against the Afghan male come after two Afghan men at Fort McCoy in Monroe County, Wisconsin, are being prosecuted for separate charges of domestic abuse and child sex crimes.
In those two cases, one of the Afghans is accused of strangling and suffocating his wife, whom he has allegedly abused for years. The other Afghan is accused of molesting 12-year-old and 14-year-old boys and threatening them with violence if they reported the abuse.
Federal Reserve: Businesses Say Vaccine Mandates Are Hurting Employment
While employment increased at a modest to moderate rate in recent weeks, the Fed’s so-called Beige Book noted that the U.S. economy has been “dampened by a low supply of workers,” partially due to vaccine mandates.
“Transportation and technology firms saw particularly low labor supply, while many retail, hospitality, and manufacturing firms cut hours or production because they did not have enough workers,” its report summary said.
“Firms reported high turnover, as workers left for other jobs or retired. Child-care issues and vaccine mandates were widely cited as contributing to the problem, along with COVID-related absences.”
Some manufacturing businesses reported a “higher labor turnover that some attributed to the lagged effects of the pandemic” but some said the quits were “in response to vaccine mandates,” the Boston Fed also said in its report.
Rocket failure delays US hypersonic test after China fired 2nd missile
The United States military had to delay a test of its new hypersonic weapons system due to rocket failure, according to Reuters on Thursday.
A booster rocket with a hypersonic glide body attached failed to launch during a test at Kodiak, Alaska, according to ABC News.
The aborted launch was part of the joint ‘Dark Eagle’ program jointly run by the Army and Navy to develop land and submarine based hypersonic missiles.
It came just hours after the Pentagon released a statement touting the successful testing of hypersonic weapon component prototypes at a facility in Virginia.
It comes after it was revealed that China carried out a second test of what is believed to be a hypersonic orbital missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, intelligence sources have claimed.
Florida port authority tells cargo vessels to divert to sunshine state
A Florida port authority is inviting steamships waiting to dock in California to divert via the Panama Canal to the sunshine state, where there are no backlogs.
The Jacksonville Port Authority said it’s the solution to an unprecedented logjam at The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, where weeks-long queues are slowing commerce ahead of the year’s busiest shopping season.
It’s a sharp contrast from the scene in Jacksonville, which officials said has maintained terminal fluidity – and set a new container volume record – despite market disruptions.
Florida ports council president Michael Rubin said they can expedite cargo ship movement by rerouting container ships via the Panama Canal, a seven-day journey from Southern California to Northern Florida.
Fed cracks down on trading by top officials in wake of scandal
The Federal Reserve on Thursday announced it will ban top officials from trading in individual stocks and bonds as part of a major overhaul of conflict-of-interest rules at the central bank in the wake of recent trading scandals.
Under the new rules, Fed policymakers and senior staff will be prohibited from active trading and will be able to purchase only diversified investment vehicles like mutual funds, according to a news release from the central bank.
“These tough new rules raise the bar high in order to assure the public we serve that all of our senior officials maintain a single-minded focus on the public mission of the Federal Reserve,” Fed Chair Jerome Powell said in the release.
For his part, Powell sold between $1 million and $5 million in a broad index fund in October 2020, leading to questions about when it’s appropriate for the Fed chair to engage in any such activity at all.
The controversy has come at an awkward time for Powell as he awaits a decision on whether President Joe Biden will reappoint him to a second term.

Karen Arikpo says she’s never spoken to anyone about this experience, not even her husband, until now.
Arikpo has been a DC police officer for 24 years, a career she says was built on a painful secret. She says in 1997 when she was a recruit in the police academy, she got pregnant.
Dickerson is now among 10 Black women suing the department for $100 million claiming discrimination and harassment. Her abortion claim is not part of that suit.

Apple, Facebook targeted by consumer bureau in tech industry investigation
The CFPB also demanded information from Amazon, Google, PayPal and Square as part of the investigation, in the first big move by agency director Rohit Chopra since he took the helm of the bureau earlier this month. The companies at issue operate digital payments systems.
The move sent a clear signal to Wall Street and the tech industry that Chopra — a close ally of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) — plans to return the bureau to the aggressive posture of its early days, after it was criticized during the Trump years for easing oversight of financial firms. The CFPB is the brainchild of Warren.
The CFPB said the information it requested will help regulators understand how the firms use personal payments data and manage data access to users, as the agency considers whether adequate consumer protections are in place.
The bureau said it also plans to study the payment system practices of Chinese tech firms, including Alipay and WeChat Pay.

The delay in unloading the containers at the ports delays the ships’ return voyage to Asia to collect more containers for the next shipment, which only backlogs ports in Asia and further delays the flow of goods to the United States.
Even if there were enough truck drivers to move the containers from the seaports, available warehouses are becoming more expensive and rare, further driving up the cost for consumers to receive goods.
President Joe Biden has responded to the supply chain crisis by demanding a few ports remain operational for 24 hours a day. Yet many endpoint destinations are closed during the night, so truckers are not able to deliver the containers until the morning.
Ex-Minneapolis cop faces new sentence in death of 911 caller
Mohamed Noor was initially convicted of third-degree murder and manslaughter in the 2017 fatal shooting of Justine Ruszczyk Damond, a 40-year-old dual U.S.-Australian citizen and yoga teacher who was engaged to be married.
With his conviction and sentence for murder thrown out, he could be out on supervised release within months.
Noor, who is Somali American, was believed to be the first Minnesota officer convicted of murder for an on-duty shooting.
Activists who had long called for officers to be held accountable for the deadly use of force applauded the murder conviction but lamented that it came in a case in which the officer is Black and his victim was white.
Some questioned whether the case was treated the same as police shootings involving Black victims.
Border Patrol agents in Texas catch MS-13 members, including one sought for child sex offense
Agents in Hidalgo, Texas on Friday encountered a group of 17 migrants – one of whom was discovered to be an El Salvadoran with convictions for aggravated homicide and attempted homicide, border officials said. The man is also an MS-13 gang member, according to authorities.
Also on Friday, another MS-13 member was located in a group of 65 migrants near La Joya. Just two days later, again in Hidalgo, agents encountered one MS-13 member in a group of 11 migrants, who had previously been deported.
Later on Sunday than say they located another, who had been convicted of assault causing bodily injury in Dallas in 2010 and who had been sentenced to 90 days for the crime. He also had an active warrant out for his arrest — again in Dallas for aggravated sexual assault of a child.

The letter from Tabak describes the results of a limited experiment, where “laboratory mice infected with [a modified bat coronavirus] became sicker than those infected with the [original] bat coronavirus.”

The man with the sign then mocks their claims by also yelling about his “weapon.” He’s then escorted off the property.

Australian Authorities Offer A$1 Million Reward for Missing 4-Year-Old Cleo Smith
Cleo Smith vanished from her family’s tent at Blowholes campsite in Macleod, about 30 miles north of the town of Carnarvon, in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to Western Australian Police.
Since then, search teams have been scouring rough terrain and nearby sea, but so far they have found no sign of the child or her black and red sleeping bag.
Police now believe she was abducted.
With few clues to go on, Western Australia’s Premier Mark McGowan and Police Minister Paul Papalia announced a reward Thursday for information that leads to Cleo, or to the arrest and conviction of the person or people involved in her disappearance.
Report: Police investigating Facebook Israel under anti-terror law
Palestinian Media Watch is reporting it has been informed by police they are investigating Facebook Israel and its CEO on suspicion the company was “aiding and abetting” Fatah’s “incitement to terror” under the nation’s Anti-Terror Law.
The watchdog organization said Israeli police have informed PMW of an official investigation under the law that allows up to five years in jail for someone who “publishes direct calls to commit acts of terror.”
PMW’s chief, Itamar Marcus, explained in an PMW alerted Facebook on May 9, writing to CEO Adi Soffer Teeni, that “Fatah was using its many Facebook pages to publish calls to commit acts of terror.
PMW demanded that Facebook close Fatah’s Facebook pages.”online report that the organization filed the formal complaint months ago, but it just found out about the investigation.

According to Financial Times, Worldcoin is part of an effort to distribute digital money more broadly around the world. The project has already given out around 30 devices called “orbs,” which are being used to scan people’s eyes on four continents.
Worldcoin co-founder Alex Blania said the project would not invade users’ privacy, noting that the orbs convert the eye photos into unique codes composed of letters and numbers before permanently deleting the scans.
The code would be used to determine if a user has previously claimed Worldcoin currency.
“Even if I would have your iris code in one form or another, I would have no chance to find out who you actually are on the blockchain,” Blania said. Worldcoin is part of the ethereum blockchain.
Blania said roughly 130,000 people have had their eyes scanned so far. The project has already raised $25 million in venture capital.
Blind woman able to see again using groundbreaking brain implant
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — A blind woman, living without her vision for 16 years, now has the ability to see shapes again thanks to a revolutionary brain implant. An international team says this groundbreaking procedure has created a form of “artificial vision” by stimulating neurons in the brain.
Researchers from Spain, the Netherlands, and the United States implanted a microelectrode array containing 100 microneedles into the visual cortex of the 58-year-old patient. The electrodes recorded activity from and stimulated the neurons around this implant.
From there, the woman wore eyeglasses with a built-in miniature video camera that picked up the visual signals from specialized software. The data then went to the electrodes in the patient’s brain where the stimulated neurons could produce white points of lights called phosphenes — creating an image.
Protesters take to the streets demanding full civilian rule in Sudan
Images posted on social media showed vast crowds marching in different parts of the Sudanese capital in protests to reject military rule as the crisis in the country’s troubled transition from authoritarian rule deepened.
The military has shared power with civilians in an increasingly frayed transitional sovereign authority since a popular uprising removed President Omar al-Bashir after three decades in power.
At least one Sudanese journalist was reportedly shot in the head while covering the protests, which came amid mounting tension over the country’s faltering democratic transition.
According to some estimates, participants numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Protesters in Omdurman were met with heavy teargas to prevent them from crossing a key Nile bridge leading to central Khartoum. Plumes of smoke could be seen across the city as protesters burned tyres and waved Sudanese flags.
Haiti gang leader threatens to kill kidnapped US missionaries
Wilson Joseph, the supposed leader of the 400 Mawozo gang, said: “I swear by thunder that if I don’t get what I’m asking for, I will put a bullet in the heads of these Americans.”
Joseph also threatened the prime minister, Ariel Henry, and the chief of Haiti’s national police, Léon Charles, as he spoke in front of coffins that apparently held several members of his gang who were recently killed.
“You guys make me cry. I cry water. But I’m going to make you guys cry blood,” he said.
Weston Showalter, a spokesman for the religious group, read a letter from the hostages’ families, in which they said, “God has given our loved ones the unique opportunity to live out our Lord’s command to love your enemies.”
The same day that the missionaries were kidnapped, a gang also abducted a Haiti university professor, according to a statement that Haiti’s ombudsman-like Office of Citizen Protection issued on Tuesday.
It also noted that a Haitian pastor abducted earlier this month has not been released despite a ransom being paid.
South Korea Just Launched Its First Domestically-Built Rocket Into Space
South Korea’s first test flight to space saw a three-stage KSLV-II Nuri rocket lift into the stratosphere emblazoned with the country’s national flag from the Naro Space Center at 4:00 AM EDT.
The country’s President Moon Jae-in watched the launch from the nearby space center, and confirmed that the rocket had successfully completed its initial flight sequences, but failed to send the test payload into orbit.
The S. Korean president gave adulation to the workers involved in the launch, and said the project would continue to press further despite the incomplete results of Thursday’s test.
“It’s not long before we’ll be able to launch it exactly into the target trajectory,” he said, according to a transcript.

Las Vegas police fatally shot a man Tuesday after he kidnapped an ex-girlfriend and pointed a gun at officers, police said.
