Embattled San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin Blames Police for Crime Crisis
But Gascón isn’t the only California DA in trouble. San Francisco residents are unhappy with DA Chesa Boudin due to the surge in the city’s crime rates.
If there is one person at the center of San Francisco’s crime discussion, it is Chesa Boudin; a social justice-minded reformer who campaigned on a platform of decarceration, ending cash bail.
District Attorney Chesa Boudin claimed Sunday that placing blame on his prosecutors for crime in San Francisco’s neighborhoods is miscast and should be focused on the police officers union and a poor clearance rate of crimes that are reported to police.
In an interview with KPIX 5’s Ken Basida, Boudin didn’t mince words when it came to a public perception that he is soft on crime — a belief that has spawned two recall campaigns demanding his removal from office.
Texas mom, 28, is shot dead behind the wheel after loading her kids into the car for school
Samantha Lopez, 28, was reportedly shot in the vehicle outside of her home at an apartment complex on the northeast side of town.
Police said her children, ages 10, six and two, were inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
Police said Lopez’s estranged husband was in custody and being questioned on Monday after a witness reported he was seen just before Lopez was shot.
Police Chief Bill McManus said the estranged husband had violated multiple protective orders since 2018 and was out on bond at the time of the shooting. Officials are still investigating and no arrests have been made.
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation sold ALL of its shares in Apple and Twitter – worth more than $140 million – just BEFORE couple announced divorce
The couple didn’t have a prenuptial agreement. Bill Gates is worth around $127 billion, according to the latest tally by Forbes. The foundation, meanwhile, is the world’s largest, with an endowment of more than $50 billion.
The foundation’s sales come as the couple has been repositioning its massive personal portfolio as Bill has been transferring stock to Melinda.
As for the foundation, filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission show it has reinvested the money gained by selling the Apple and Twitter shares by buying 5.7 million shares in South Korean e-commerce company Coupang.
Since the couple announced their divorce on May 3, Bill has disclosed stock transfers including shares of AutoNation and Canadian National Railway.
Melinda is also now one of the largest individual shareholders in two Mexican companies, bottler Coca-Cola Femsa SAB and and cable company Grupo Televisa SA. Bill has already sold off or donated most of his stock in Microsoft, which he co-founded, but still owns at 1.3 percent stake valued at about $25 billion.

Chinese Propaganda Outlet Paid Millions to American Newspapers and Magazines, Records Show
China Daily paid more than $1.6 million for advertising campaigns in Time magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Financial Times, and Foreign Policy magazine, according to disclosures filed with the Justice Department.
The Beijing-controlled news agency paid another $1 million to American newspapers, including the L.A. Times, Chicago Tribune, and Houston Chronicle, to print copies of its own publications.
Several American newspapers have come under fire for publishing China Daily inserts entitled “China Watch.”
Though designed to look like normal newspaper stories, the inserts contain articles that portray the Chinese government and life in China in a positive light.
Two Marines run over by truck while camping at Croatan National Forest, NC police say
The two were taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville with serious injuries, McFadyen told WCTI. They are expected to survive.
The driver, who officials say is stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, drove off after hitting the tent, McFadyen told WITN.
The vehicle was later found, and the suspect was apprehended at Camp Lejeune and taken to the Craven County Sheriff’s Office for further questioning, WNCT reports.

He signaled his support after it cleared the Legislature, arguing that students should learn “the exceptionalism of our nation,” not things that “inherently divide” people.
The legislation, which was amended several times in the final days of the legislative session, of an education bill, takes effect July 1.
Among other things, Tennessee’s teachers can’t instruct that “an individual, by virtue of the individual’s race or sex, is inherently privileged, racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or subconsciously.”
Critical Race Theory: National Parents’ Group Publishes Guide on How to Fight It
The national parents’ organization, which grew out of the battle against the Common Core State Standards, has been urging state lawmakers to ban CRT in K-12 schools.
CRT is a Marxist-based philosophy that embraces the concept that all social and cultural issues should be viewed through the lens of race and ethnicity.
As a model for parent coalitions, USPIE points to the website created by the community of parents in Southlake, Texas, where, USPIE notes, “families united and took control of their local school board.”
“A well-orchestrated plan like this could be replicated in your community,” the parents’ organization asserts.
Texas to Join Three Other States as Revolt Against Critical Race Theory Begins
The adapted version of House Bill 3979 specifically bans the teaching of the 1619 Project, which is a curriculum developed by The New York Times as a spinoff of its series that claimed all American history was rooted in slavery and that the true story of American began in 1619 with the arrival of the first slaves from Africa.
“To suggest that America is so racist at its core to be irredeemable and to suggest that people based on the color of their skin can never overcome biases and can never treat each other fairly, that’s a real problem,” Hughes said of the 1619 Project, according to The Texas Tribune.
Georgina Perez, a member of the Texas Board of Education, attacked those supporting the legislation.

Maryland man arrested after calling in threat to kill a cop, driving car into police station
Information obtained during the phone call led police to believe that Kahl was still near his home. Police said responding officers located him there driving erratically.
Kahl struck several parked cars and tried to run over the officers before speeding away, Terry said.
He drove to the police station where he struck another parked car before intentionally smashing his vehicle through the front doors of the station into the lobby, according to police.
Kahl then jumped out of the vehicle, went back out through the demolished lobby doors and tried to attack police, Terry said.
Washington DC police searching for Maserati driver who opened fire on car in apparent road rage incident
The gunman can be seen getting out of his vehicle at a traffic stop and walking over to the driver’s side of the sedan stopped in front of him. He then pulls out a gun and appears to open fire.
As the sedan speeds away, the gunman appears to point his gun at oncoming traffic. It was not clear if any additional shots were fired.
A woman, who authorities did not name, was located nearby with an apparent gunshot wound, according to police. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a hospital.
California customs agents seize $2.5M worth of meth hidden in watermelon shipment: CBP
The drug bust was made last Tuesday at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry after authorities stopped a 47-year-old Mexican national driving a truck with a trailer, CBP said in a Friday press release.
A CBP canine team sniffed out the meth. Officers found 193 containers of the drug wrapped in plastic among the crates carrying the fruit.
The truck driver was arrested and is facing federal charges. He is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego.

Moscow Court Fines Facebook, Google For Failing To Delete Content Banned In Russia
U.S.-based social-network giant Facebook was fined 26 million rubles ($353,000) by Moscow’s Tagansky District Court on May 25. That case involved eight reports about material posted on Facebook that Russian authorities wanted Facebook to remove.
The same court on May 25 also levied three separate fines totaling about $82,000 against the U.S. technology giant Google. The court said Google was found guilty of “administrative offenses” and was ordered to pay 2 million rubles — or about $27,000 — for each offense.
The charges concern posts that Russia says encouraged minors to join unsanctioned protests in January, when people across the country took to the streets to support Kremlin critic Aleksei Navalny after he was detained.
The fines come amid a wider dispute between Moscow and Google.
US military commander warns over Iraq militias’ drones
Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie said the drones were difficult to detect and destroy, and he admitted the US was struggling to deal with them. Finding better ways to counter such attacks was a top priority, he said.
“We’re open to all kinds of things,” he said. “The army is working it very hard. Still, I don’t think we’re where we want to be.”
An armed drone targeted US-led coalition forces near a northern Iraq airport in April, causing a large fire and damage to a building. The US blames Iran-backed militia groups for such attacks.
McKenzie said the militias were frustrated because they had expected US forces to leave Iraq after the death of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis in a US airstrike near Baghdad airport last year.
India: Terrorism Police Visit Twitter Offices After Site Flags Ruling Party Tweet
The Delhi police force falls under the jurisdiction of India’s Ministry of Home Affairs.
The force sent members of its Special Cell team, which investigates terrorism and other serious crimes, to Twitter India offices in Delhi and Gurugram in the neighboring state of Haryana on Monday evening.
“Delhi police said it had received a complaint about the classification of Patra’s tweet, which it said it was investigating, and visited the offices to serve Twitter India’s head a notice of the inquiry [on May 24].
In a statement, the police said Twitter India’s managing director’s replies on the subject had been ‘very ambiguous,’” Tech Crunch reported on May 24.
‘We Couldn’t Even Pay People’: Hong Kong May Discard Vaccines Due to Low Demand
The warning, a rejection of proposals by local Hong Kong officials to combat vaccine hesitancy, followed reports that Hong Kong may have to discard large numbers of vaccine candidate doses soon to expire after failing to convince locals to take them.
Concerns about the efficacy and safety of Coronavac, by the Chinese firm Sinovac Biotech, have exacerbated the problem. Coronavac has tested to be only 50.38 percent effective in preventing coronavirus infections, compared to the 95-percent effectiveness rate of the Pfizer product.
Health workers in Hong Kong have openly encouraged people to seek out the Pfizer product, resulting in government retribution in at least one case where a clinic lost its privilege to administer vaccines after stating that Coronavac had a “bad reputation.”
Even the few who have opted to get vaccinated are showing signs of significant fear – among them a spike in business for lawyers in the city who specialize in drafting final wills and testaments, according to RTHK.
