Ark. House and Senate Override Veto on Bill Protecting Kids From Chemical Castration

The Arkansas House overrode Hutchinson’s veto, 72 to 25. The Senate overrode the veto by a 25-8 margin.
There is no evidence that transgender surgery improves the mental health outcomes of gender dysphoric people.
Men and women who formerly identified as transgender and underwent surgery have grown to reject transgender identity and lament the damage they did to their own bodies.
Last year, Britain’s High Court ruled that children under age 16 lack the ability to consent to “puberty-blocking” drugs and cross-sex hormones that have irreversible life-long effects.
Michigan’s COVID-19 rates are worst in the nation, despite restrictions

As of Tuesday, Michigan has added 100,000 cases and 532 deaths in the last 27 days, outpacing all other states, the Detroit News reported.
The state’s percentage of positive COVID-19 tests continued to increase for the sixth straight week. On Saturday, the state had a 17.6% case positivity rate.
Ingham County Health Officer Linda Vail blamed rising case rates on people breaking COVID-19 rules.
Owosso barber Karl Manke appeals $9,000 fine for defying Michigan Gov. Whitmer’s lockdown orders

The Michigan Board of Barber Examiners fined Karl Manke $3,000 for violating state sanitation and equipment regulations and another $6,000 for giving haircuts during the Operation Haircut protests on the steps of the Lansing Capitol in May 2020.
Six other haircutters who participated in Operation Haircut had their criminal charges dropped. Manke has prevailed on all other criminal charges except for the administrative fees.
Manke called on Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel to dismiss the remaining administrative licensing action and all fines, reasoning that the Michigan Supreme Court declared all of her COVID-19 executive orders already in place or issued after April 30, 2020, unconstitutional.
In the appeal, Manke argued he was fined $6,000 for exercising his First Amendment right.

California plans to lift most pandemic restrictions June 15

The mask mandate in the nation’s most populated state will remain in effect, Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly said Tuesday, and he cautioned that California will reopen more widely in mid-June only if vaccine supply remains sufficient and hospitalization rates remain stable and low.
Businesses can open with “common-sense risk reduction measures,” including mandated masking and encouraging vaccinations. The state will continue contact tracing and testing.
Most capacity limits will be lifted, although large-scale indoor events, such as conventions, will be allowed only with testing or vaccination verification requirements, Ghaly said.
Iowa governor signs ‘constitutional carry’ into law

House File 756 “protects the Second Amendment rights of Iowa’s law-abiding citizens while still preventing the sale of firearms to criminals and other dangerous individuals,” the governor said in a statement.
The new law also takes “greater steps to inform law enforcement about an individual’s mental illness helping ensure firearms don’t end up in the wrong hands,” she said.
“We will never be able to outlaw or prevent every single bad actor from getting a gun, but what we can do is ensure law-abiding citizens have full access to their constitutional rights while keeping Iowans safe,” the Osceola Republican said in the statement.
72% of Americans say illegal immigration is a ‘direct threat’ to US: Poll

Seventy-two percent of Americans say illegal immigration poses a “direct threat” to the United States according to a new poll, and more than 50 percent disapprove of how President Joe Biden is handling border security and immigration as illegal border crossings are on pace to reach the highest rate in two decades.
Forty percent of Americans disapprove of how Biden is handling the unaccompanied illegal immigrant children crisis, with 66 percent of Republicans and 43 percent of Independents disapproving.
Just 15 percent of Democrats disapprove of the president’s approach; 40 percent of Democrats said they neither approved or disapproved.
Gunman in shooting near Ft. Detrick in Maryland was Navy corpsman, reports

The Navy said the suspect is a 38-year-old male who worked as a Navy hospital corpsman, according to several news reports.
A gunman allegedly shot two people who are now in critical condition at a tech park in Frederick, Md., then fled to a nearby military base.
The suspect was fatally shot by police who had followed him, according to the Associated Press. He reportedly got inside the fort’s gates before he was stopped.

Texas mother accused of killing her 6-year-old son for insurance money

An autopsy ruled the boy’s death a homicide after finding toxic amounts of methamphetamine and cocaine and various antihistamines, according to court records.
The boy’s grandfather told Houston police that after Marks had given her son medicine, the boy started hallucinating and “believed there were bugs on his clothing” and that his grandson “became scared of his hallucinations,” according to court documents.
Adam Marks told police that his daughter gave her son more medicine, Nyquil, a few hours before he died, police said.
Police identify 6 people dead in Texas murder-suicide pact

The Allen Police Department said investigators believe brothers Tanvir Towhid, 21, and Farhan Towhid, 19, made a pact to kill their parents, sister and grandmother before killing themselves.
The victims were identified as Altafun Nessa, 77; Iren Islam, 56; Towhidul Islam, 54; and Farbin Towhid, 19.
Fazia Rahman, who graduated Allen High School last year with Farhan and Farbin Towhid, said the family was welcoming and the parents “treated everyone like they were their own kids.”

Biden gave Mayorkas 60 days to evaluate current federal contracts to work on the wall, Fox News reported.
During the 60 days, taxpayer money continued to fund the contractors despite a pause on any construction or related work, according to Fox News.
“The government is paying contractors up to a million dollars a month to be on standby. That’s going to the total cost,” Associated General Contractors of America’s Brian Turnmail said, Fox News reported.
“So, if the government takes a long time to resolve the dispute, that will cost taxpayers more.”

“The Russian military build-up close to the Ukrainian border is a reminder that the war in Ukraine is not a frozen conflict,” said Alyona Getmanchuk, director of the Kiev-based New Europe Center, in a statement. “On the contrary, Russia’s war against Ukraine remains very much active and ongoing.”
The situation is volatile, observers said; but, some noted, it might not lead to war.
“In recent days, Moscow has moved more weapons and troops around, and let loose a volley of nasty threats,” said the Atlantic Council’s Melinda Haring in a statement.
