Georgia pastor gives Waffle House waitress life-changing tip
STOCKBRIGE, Ga. – A Henry County pastor was just following his stomach when his heart pulled him in a different direction.
Bishop Eusebio Phelps just wanted a Waffle House All Star with extra bacon, but when he talked to the pregnant waitress working that day, he knew something much bigger was in the works.
“She was just so kind and she was so pleasant. She was a sweetheart and that just touched my heart,” Phelps said.
Texas cop on leave in shooting death of 31-year-old man
The incident began Saturday afternoon when Price saw a man strike a woman at a gas station and intervened, the family told the station.
As Price tried to break up the fight, an officer pulled up, the station reported. His family said the officer may have thought Price and the other man were fighting each other.
A Taser was deployed and then the officer fired shots, the family said, according to the station.
Texas Attorney General Paxton accused by seven top aides of bribery, abuse of office

The seven aides delivered a letter Thursday to a state human resources office, informing the director that they are seeking an investigation into Paxton and his conduct as the state’s top attorney.
The letter is signed by Jeff Mateer, Paxton’s first assistant, Mateer’s deputy and five deputy attorneys general
Marteer resigned Friday.

The officer had pulled over two vehicles — a white van and a blue sedan — blocking traffic near the intersection of Northeast 47th Avenue and Northeast Couch Street, police told the Oregonian.
Video shows protesters converging upon the scene and the white van escaping and speeding off, after which protesters cheered and applauded.
The lone, completely outnumbered officer then found himself facing down a crowd of protesters who inched their way toward him as he stood next to the blue sedan.
Justices Thomas, Alito slam Obergefell same-sex marriage decision as Supreme Court denies Kim Davis case
Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito said Monday that Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court case that mandated all states recognize same-sex marriages, is “found nowhere in the text” of the Constitution and threatens “the religious liberty of the many Americans who believe that marriage is a sacred institution between one man and one woman.”
Thomas and Alito dissented from the original Obergefell decision and their statement Monday could indicate that they would vote to overturn it if presented the chance.
Chicago Suffers 81 Homicides Last Month, Deadliest September In 25 Years
The Chicago Tribune reports that last month, there were 81 homicides in the city of Chicago, just two fewer than there were in the same month in 1993 when the city suffered through 83 homicides.
The record, the Tribune notes, was set in 1992, during the heat of a gang war, when 109 people lost their lives to violence.
Previously, the city was comparing 2020’s numbers to 2016, when the city was also in the midst of a violent gang war and casualties were high. Now, the city seems poised to break those records.
Chicago man faces 14 felony burglary charges for August looting spree
Lee Mitchell, 28, was arrested shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Sunday and charged with seven counts each of burglary and looting for allegedly ransacking stores in the downtown Chicago area on Aug. 10, police said.
Mitchell was one of the hundreds of people who allegedly made their way into the Windy City’s tony Magnificent Mile – some even arriving in “car caravans,” as Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said at the time.
Chicago violence: 3 dead, 34 shot in weekend
CBS Chicago reported that the first homicide occurred at about 5:45 p.m. on Friday night that included a man, 35, and a 14-year-old girl. The pair was walking on a street when a vehicle pulled up and opened fire.
The teen was struck in the ankle and thigh and the man was hit in the head. She is in good condition and he was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead. The report did not identify their relationship.
Portland man arrested after shattering patrol car window, pepper-sprayed interior: police
An officer was inside the vehicle at the time and is recovering from his injuries, police said. The suspect, John B Russell, 41, is facing multiple charges.
“As police officers, we know that the vast majority of community members who approach and contact us do so with no intention to do us harm,” said Chief Chuck Lovell.
“However, attacks like this one remind us all that there is the potential for people to try to take direct violent action against police officers.”

Senator Cruz says Chief Justice John Roberts ‘despises Donald Trump’
In an appearance on David Brody’s recently launched show “The Water Cooler,” Senator Cruz, an attorney and author of the new book “One Vote Away: How a Single Supreme Court Seat Can Change History,” told the host that “John Roberts has become the new Sandra Day O’Connor.”
Cruz said he agrees with Vice President Mike Pence, who in an interview last month, told David Brody that Justice Roberts has been a “disappointment to conservatives.”

Commentary/Opinion: Instead of investigating Clinton’s scheme, Comey and FBI deputy Director Andrew McCabe — probably at Obama’s direction — buried it under the infamous “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation into Trump and his 2016 campaign that was already under way.
Let’s set this in context. The Hillary Clinton campaign, through the Perkins, Coie law firm, hired a company called Fusion GPS to gather information about Trump’s supposed connections to the Russian government.
Fusion hired former British spy Christopher Steele to gather the information, which became the “Steele dossier,” some three dozen memos that alleged all sorts of connections between Trump, his campaign, and Moscow.
Thus, for more than three years, these charades consumed the attention of Trump, much of his administration, and essentially all of the U.S. media. In short, with little effort on his part, Putin’s disinformation campaign — which it undoubtedly was — with the help of Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and the FBI, tied up an American president and our government for three years.

Trump pledges ‘biggest tax cut ever’ if he wins election in November

Trump, who presided over the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2017, the biggest overhaul of the tax code since Ronald Reagan was in the Oval Office, has repeatedly pledged a follow-up, often referred to as “Tax Cuts 2.0.”
It’s unclear exactly what it would include, but the president has previously said he would cut the top capital gains tax rate to 15% from 20%; forgive temporarily deferred payroll taxes; give tax breaks to U.S. companies that bring their operations back from China; and codify changes made in the previous tax overhaul that are slated to sunset in 2025.

WHO now says that 1 in 10 people worldwide have likely been infected with COVID-19
The estimate, if correct, would amount to more than 760 million people based on the current global population of 7.6 billion.
That figure greatly exceeds the current number of confirmed cases worldwide — which is projected by the WHO and Johns Hopkins University to be approximately 35.3 million.
On one hand, the estimate paints a dark picture of a much more infectious disease and the possibility that there are a great multitude of asymptomatic carriers. But on the other hand, if the figure is accurate, then perhaps the virus is far less deadly than is presently believed.
It may also indicate an unsurprising lack of accurate reporting from several countries.
Floods that hit Italy, France leave 9 dead, several missing
Flooding has devastated mountainous areas in France’s southeastern region of Alpes-Maritimes and Italy’s northwestern regions of Liguria and Piedmont, after a storm swept through the two countries on Friday and Saturday.
In France, firefighters in the Alpes-Maritimes region were still searching Monday for at least eight people missing who witnesses described as possibly being carried off by floodwaters. They include two firefighters whose vehicle fell into the water as the road collapsed.
In addition, French rescuers are seeking 12 other people whose families have not heard of them since the storm, which blocked roads and cut off communications.
Paris bars to close as Covid infections rise among young people
Bars in the Paris region have been ordered to close from Tuesday after health authorities reported a sharp rise in the number of Covid-19 infections among the 20-30 age group.
Restaurants in and around the French capital have been given a reprieve and told they can stay open on condition that they enforce new, stricter health safety regulations.
This will involve taking the name and telephone number of diners, allowing a maximum of six people per group and providing hand gel on each table.
